Effects of pollutants and microplastics ingestion on oxidative stress and monoaminergic activity of seabream brains

Esther Hoyo-Alvarez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of pollutants and microplastics ingestion on fish brains, specifically looking at oxidative stress biomarkers and monoaminergic neurotransmitters in gilthead seabream. The results show that a diet enriched with microplastics and pollutants increases oxidative stress biomarker activity and leads to changes in dopaminergic and serotonergic system activity in seabream brains. However, after a detoxification period, there is a tendency for enzymatic and neurotransmitter levels to recover.

Cadmium induces apoptosis and autophagy in swine small intestine by downregulating the PI3K/Akt pathway

Haoran Zhang et al.

Summary: Cadmium (Cd) is an environmental contaminant known for its potential toxicity, particularly in accumulating in the liver and kidney and causing serious damage. In this study, Cd-induced intestinal damage in swine was investigated through in vivo and in vitro models. The research found that Cd treatment induced ileal apoptosis and autophagy in cells, activating the PI3K/Akt pathway, and altering expression levels of apoptosis and autophagy-related proteins. Furthermore, the study showed that treatment with a PI3K activator could mitigate the effects of Cd-induced apoptosis and autophagy.

Enrichment of polystyrene microplastics induces histological damage, oxidative stress, Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway-related gene expression in loach juveniles (Paramisgurnus dabryanus)

Xianqing Wang et al.

Summary: Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) have harmful effects on aquatic organisms, but their precise effects are not completely understood. This study investigated the enrichment of PS-MPs in loach juveniles and its effects on their growth, liver histomorphology, antioxidant enzymes, and Keap1-Nrf2 signaling pathway-related gene expression. The results showed that PS-MPs were enriched in the liver, intestine, and gill of loach, and their enrichment amount was higher in the liver than in the gill and intestine. PS-MPs also caused liver damage and decreased the activities of antioxidant enzymes.

Therapeutic Mechanisms of Berberine to Improve the Intestinal Barrier Function via Modulating Gut Microbiota, TLR4/NF-kappa B/MTORC Pathway and Autophagy in Cats

JingWen Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism of berberine in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in cats. The results showed that berberine can alleviate inflammation by modulating the Toll-like receptors 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kappa B) signaling pathway and activating autophagy. Additionally, berberine significantly reduces the expression of inflammatory cytokines in cats' serum and enhances the antioxidant effect, thereby repairing intestinal barrier function.
