Linkages between soil erosion and long-term changes of landscape pattern in a small watershed on the Chinese Loess Plateau

Chaoliang Chen et al.

Summary: Understanding the response of soil erosion to changes in land use and landscape pattern is important for optimizing soil and water conservation measures in a watershed. This study focuses on the Zhifanggou watershed in the Chinese Loess Plateau and assesses its long-term land use changes and their impacts on sediment yield. The results show that land use changes have significantly affected sediment yields, and the landscape indices of interspersion and juxtaposition and Perimeter-area fractal dimension are closely related to sediment yield. Increased vegetation cover and spatial heterogeneity of landscapes can reduce sediment transport and discharge into rivers. These findings provide valuable insights for improving soil and water conservation measures in watersheds.

Landscape context determines soil fungal diversity in a fragmented habitat

Nier Su et al.

Summary: Habitat fragmentation is associated with increased soil fungal diversity, while the change in soil bacterial diversity is not significant. Soil characteristics play a key role in soil bacterial diversity, while landscape context has a stronger impact on maintaining soil fungal diversity.

Disentangling effects of natural and anthropogenic drivers on forest net ecosystem production

You-Ren Wang et al.

Summary: By analyzing data from 22 forest sites across Europe, we found that deposition of sulphur and nitrogen has significant impacts on Net Ecosystem Production (NEP) of forests. Sulphur deposition above 5 kg S ha(-1) yr(-1) can significantly reduce NEP, while nitrogen deposition around 22 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1) has the highest positive effect on NEP. Our results emphasize the importance of air quality management for maintaining the biogeochemical functions of forests and mitigating climate change.

Sea Level Variation and Trend Analysis by Comparing Mann-Kendall Test and Innovative Trend Analysis in Front of the Red River Delta, Vietnam (1961-2020)

Hai Minh Nguyen et al.

Summary: In this study, the sea surface height at the Hon Dau tidal gauge station in Vietnam was analyzed between 1961 and 2020. The results showed that the annual sea level varied within a range of 165.23 cm to 206.06 cm, with an average water level of 190.87 cm over the 60-year period. The sea level has been rising in recent years, particularly from 2016 to the present. The Mann-Kendall test and Sen's innovative trend analysis were used to estimate the sea level rise, and both methods showed a significant increasing trend of about 3.08 to 3.38 mm/year for the entire period.

Impact of LUCC on landscape pattern in the Yangtze River Basin during 2001-2019

Hongfei Yang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impacts of land use/land cover change (LUCC) on landscape pattern in the Yangtze River Basin from 2001 to 2019. The results show that the main LUCC in the basin during this period includes an increase in forest, wetland, and urban areas, while grassland and cropland are decreasing. The landscape pattern analysis reveals that grassland occupies an important position in the overall landscape structure, with forest, grassland, and urban landscapes exhibiting greater fragmentation.

Hongfei Yang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the impact of land use and land cover changes on vegetation net primary productivity in the Yangtze River basin from 2001 to 2018, showing that land changes led to an increase in NPP. Forest area increased the most while grassland area decreased the most.

Spatial correlations between landscape patterns and net primary productivity: A case study of the Shule River Basin, China

Yanyan Zhou et al.

Summary: Human activities and environmental degradation have led to changes in landscape patterns that can affect net primary productivity (NPP) globally. This study analyzed the correlation between landscape metrics and NPP at different scales, finding spatial variations and higher correlation at the 30 km scale. Different landscape metrics showed varying degrees of positive or negative correlation with NPP at different scales, with composition metrics playing a more significant role at the class level.
