Long-term responses of ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) to clear-cutting and wildfire in lodgepole pine stands of western Alberta, Canada

Vincent Belluz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the responses of carabid beetles to clear-cutting and wildfire in lodgepole pine forests, and compared the results with a previous study conducted in the same area. The findings showed that carabid assemblages gradually recovered in stands regenerating after harvest and converged with those in stands that had burned in the past. The composition of ground vegetation, soil cover, and tree and shrub basal areas were correlated with carabid assemblage structure, suggesting similar driving factors for plant successional gradients and carabid assemblages. The study predicted that carabid assemblages in harvested stands would recover and match those in old, never-cut pyrogenic stands given sufficient time. However, the carabid fauna in the study area appeared to be changing due to factors other than forestry, possibly influenced by a warming climate.

Spatial and temporal variation of epigaeic beetle assemblages (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Staphylinidae) in aspen-dominated mixedwood forests across north-central Alberta

Summary: The study surveyed epigaeic beetle assemblages in aspen-mixedwood forests in Alberta and found significant differences in species composition between Natural Regions and geographic locations. Climate variables and vegetation factors were identified as important factors influencing beetle communities.
