The significance of fault reactivation on the Wilson cycle undergone by the northern South China Sea area in the last 60 Myr

Giovanni Camanni et al.

Summary: This article explores the tectonic history of the northern South China Sea region over the past 60 million years, focusing on the role of fault reactivation throughout the Wilson cycle. The study found that fault reactivation plays a crucial role in accommodating deformation during both divergence and convergence episodes of the cycle, with the angle of inherited faults influencing the degree and style of reactivation. These results highlight the continuous significance of fault reactivation in plate boundary evolution and the consistency of underlying geometric controls on reactivation throughout the cycle.

Geometric and kinematic analysis of normal faults bordering continental shelves: A 3D seismic case study from the northwest South China Sea

Shouxiang Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates normal faults bordering the continental shelf of the Qiongdongnan Basin in the South China Sea, using high-quality 3D seismic data. The analysis reveals the faults predominantly tip out in the Upper Miocene and proposes a new three-stage model for fault reactivation in the basin. The evolution of normal faults on the continental shelf is attributed to regional-scale structures and large-scale slope instability in the area.

The unsteady post-rift stage of the South American passive margin based on the tectono-sedimentary evolution of the onshore Paraiba Basin, NE Brazil

Clodis de Oliveira Andrades-Filho et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the post-rift sedimentary record of the onshore Para?ba Basin to contribute to the discussion of the neotectonic history of the South American passive margin. The integration of surface and subsurface data revealed abundant tectonic structures and deformations, indicating the unsteady nature of the South Atlantic passive continental margin throughout the post-rifting stage.

Dynamic processes of the curved subduction system in Southeast Asia: A review and future perspective

Jiabiao Li et al.

Summary: Southeast Asia is located in an important regional geodynamic intersection zone, forming the largest and most complicated convergent subduction system on Earth. This review explores geophysical, geochemical, and geodynamical models of the Curved Subduction System in Southeast Asia, identifying challenges in understanding deep mantle structure and quantifying the interactions between subducting slabs and recycling materials. Improved seismic tomography, geochemical analysis, and geodynamic modeling can help depict the dynamic mechanisms controlling the evolution of such ring-shape subduction systems on Earth.

Lithospheric stretching-style variations and anomalous post-rift subsidence in the deep water sub-basins of the Pearl River Mouth Basin, northern South China Sea

Hui Xie et al.

Summary: Stretching and subsidence characteristics of passive continental margins, particularly in the Pearl River Mouth Basin in the northern South China Sea, were investigated using modeling techniques. Two significant anomalous rapid subsidence events were identified within the basin, with different driving mechanisms during the 23.03-19.8 Ma and 14.3-11.9 Ma timeframes.
