Imaging the Moho and Main Himalayan Thrust beneath the Kumaon Himalaya: constraints from receiver function analysis

Devajit Hazarika et al.

Summary: The study analyzes P-wave receiver functions in the Kumaon Himalaya and neighboring areas to investigate crustal thickness, intracrustal structures, and seismic velocity characteristics. The results reveal a ramp structure beneath the Main Himalayan Thrust that facilitates the exhumation of the Chiplakot Crystalline Belt, and a low-velocity zone with a high Poisson's ratio in the lower crust beneath the CCB. This suggests the presence of fluid/partial melt and favorable conditions for partial melting created by shear heating and decompression associated with the exhumation of the crystalline belt.

Micro-seismic hazard assessment of Ahmedabad city, Gujarat (Western India) through near-surface characterization/soil modeling

Kapil Mohan et al.

Summary: Micro-seismic hazard estimation in Ahmedabad city was conducted based on near-surface characterization and soil modeling. Various methodologies were adopted to assess seismic perspective, delineate engineering bed layer, model soil properties, simulate strong ground motion, and estimate surface strong-motion. The study considered both far-field and near-field earthquake scenarios, providing peak ground acceleration and spectral acceleration distribution maps for different structure types.

Crustal velocity and interseismic strain-rate on possible zones for large earthquakes in the Garhwal Kumaun Himalaya

John P. Pappachen et al.

Summary: The article highlights the possibility of a major earthquake similar to the 2015 Gorkha-Nepal earthquake or even greater in the Garhwal-Kumaun region. By analyzing crustal velocities data, the region is classified into four different strain-rate zones, with particular emphasis on two low strain-rate zones where large earthquakes may occur. The study also suggests the need to closely monitor the strain-reducing extensional deformation zone sandwiched between the low strain-rate zones for its impact on large earthquake occurrences.

Seismotectonics and stress perspective of the Kumaon Himalaya: A geophysical evidence of a Lesser Himalayan duplex

Somak Hajra et al.

Summary: The Kumaon Himalaya region exhibits complex faulting patterns and seismic activities, with a significant concentration of shallow-focus earthquakes in the Chiplakot Crystalline Belt (CCB) south of the Vaikrita Thrust. The region's seismic activity deviates from the typical pattern observed in the NW Himalaya seismic belt.
