Catastrophic slab loss in southwestern Pangea preserved in the mantle and igneous record

Guido M. Gianni et al.

Summary: The origin of the Permian-Triassic Choiyoi silicic large igneous province is assessed by linking the igneous record, plate-kinematic reconstructions, and the deep mantle. This study suggests a massive slab loss in Pangea as the cause of the magmatism. The integration of plate-kinematic reconstructions and lower mantle slab record supports the conclusion that the Choiyoi Magmatic Province resulted from a large-scale slab loss event in Pangea. Geochemical data and paleogeographic coincidence further indicate a slab break-off event in the Permian period.

The origin of Patagonia: insights from Permian to Middle Triassic magmatism of the North Patagonian Massif

Juan Ignacio Falco et al.

Summary: This study conducted a U-Pb-Hf isotope analysis on zircon crystals from ignimbrites in the Los Menucos Basin in northern Patagonian Massif, Argentina, in order to determine the age and origin of the magmas. The results indicate that there was eastward arc expansion in northern Patagonia from the early Permian, and slab break-off triggered uplift and basaltic underplating during the Middle Triassic. The Hf isotope data suggest an eastward-directed subduction system, supporting an autochthonous origin for Patagonia.

Early Paleozoic structural and metamorphic evolution of the Transpatagonian Orogen related to Gondwana assembly

Pablo D. Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The study explores the temporal and spatial relationships between polyphase folding and faulting, regional metamorphism, and granitoid intrusions in the low-grade basement rocks of the El Jaguelito Formation in Argentina. This investigation reveals the presence of a late Cambrian-early Ordovician orogenic belt named the Transpatagonian orogen, which is characterized by compressional tectonics, dextral shearing, and regional metamorphism. The Transpatagonian orogen is part of a paired metamorphic belt system along the Gondwana margin, divided into three tectonometamorphic zones and reworked by the Permian Gondwanide orogeny.

Reconciling Patagonia with Gondwana in early Paleozoic? Paleomagnetism of the Valcheta granites, NE North Patagonian Massif

Carmen I. Martinez Dopico et al.

Summary: This study conducted a paleomagnetic analysis on Ordovician granitoids in the North Patagonian Massif to investigate the relationship between Patagonia and Gondwana during the Early Paleozoic. The results suggest that NPM was located close to the South American margin of Gondwana and separated from other cratons by the Sierra Grande Sea since at least late Ordovician times, supporting a para-autochthonous origin for NPM. Previous hypotheses suggesting a connection between NPM and the TransAntarctic Mountains in the late Ordovician are unlikely according to new data, indicating an allochthonous NPM near the Kalahari craton.

The closure of the Rocas Verdes Basin and early tectono-metamorphic evolution of the Magallanes Fold-and-Thrust Belt, southern Patagonian Andes (52-54°S)

Veleda A. P. Muller et al.

Summary: This study investigated the poorly studied hinterland region of the Southern Andean Cordillera in the Western Domain of the Magallanes Fold-and-Thrust Belt, revealing Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous tectonic activities through new detrital zircon U-Pb ages. The findings provide insights into the initial phases of the Andean Orogeny and the along-strike connection of mylonite belts in a continent-verging thrust structure during the closure of the Rocas Verdes back-arc marginal basin.

Extending full-plate tectonic models into deep time: Linking the Neoproterozoic and the Phanerozoic

Andrew S. Merdith et al.

Summary: Recent progress in plate tectonic reconstructions has expanded beyond continental drift to reconstruct the full evolving configuration of tectonic plates and plate boundaries. A continuous full-plate model spanning 1 billion years to present-day has been developed, incorporating a revised model for the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian period and connecting it with models of the Phanerozoic. The model is geologically constrained and based on preserved data from past plate boundaries, with the goal of providing a detailed and self-consistent tectonic reconstruction for the last billion years of Earth's history.

Early Cambrian multiple-sourced plutonism in the Eastern Sierras Pampeanas, Cordoba, Argentina: Implications for the evolution of the early Paleozoic Gondwana margin

Alina M. Tibaldi et al.

Summary: Four major igneous suites with distinct geochemical characteristics have been identified in the accretionary complex of the Pampean orogeny in the southern Sierras de Cordoba, Argentina. These igneous suites are spatially and temporally related to tapping of distinct source reservoirs, with melts retaining their unique characteristics from extraction to emplacement at middle crustal depths. The generation of diverse magmatic suites at the same time is attributed to the convergent margin where a slab window opened followed by ridge-trench interaction, enhancing heat advection and intra-crustal anatexis.

Paleozoic-early Mesozoic structural evolution of the West Gondwana accretionary margin in southern Patagonia, Argentina

Rodrigo Suarez et al.

Summary: The study in the South Patagonian Andes reveals the structural record of deformation associated with pre-Andean orogenic phases and identifies a westward younging of sedimentation throughout Paleozoic-early Mesozoic times. The structural features show fold-and-thrust belts characteristic of accretionary tectonics in the Terra Australis exterior orogen.

The Devonian accretionary orogen of the North Patagonian cordillera

Carlos W. Rapela et al.

Summary: The study area in NW Patagonia contains remnants of a Devonian accretionary orogen, with two distinct magmatic domains characterized by different compositions and origins. The Foreland Devonian Domain of the North Patagonian Massif is dominated by subduction-related calc-alkaline rocks, while the Pacific Devonian Domain on the western flank of the Andes has a more primitive character.

The low-grade basement at Peninsula La Carmela, Chilean Patagonia: new data for unraveling the pre-Permian basin nature of the Eastern Andean Metamorphic Complex

D. Rojo et al.

Summary: The Eastern Andean Metamorphic Complex at Peninsula La Carmela consists of quartz-rich metaturbiditic sequences and pillow metabasalt bodies deformed under low-grade metamorphic conditions. The detrital zircon U-Pb geochronological data indicates an early Carboniferous maximum depositional age of the protolith, sourced from cratonic regions or reworked material from older metasedimentary successions in southwestern Gondwana. Pillow metabasalts with geochemical affinities of mid-oceanic ridge basalts and island-arc tholeiites suggest tectonic juxtaposition within a pre-Permian accretionary wedge of an active continental margin.

Petrology and geochronology of the San Martin de los Andes batholith: Insights into the Devonian magmatism of the North Patagonian Andes

Samanta Serra-Varela et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests the presence of Devonian plutonism in the Northern Patagonian segment of the Andes, forming along the paleo-Pacific margin of the Gondwana supercontinent. New data sheds light on the magmatic and tectonic evolution of the region during the middle Palaeozoic, with the San Martín de los Andes batholith forming between 390 and 374 Ma. The rocks within the batholith show signs of crystal fractionation, crustal assimilation, and magma mixing, indicating a complex petrological history.
