Distinct Surface Warming Response Over the Western and Eastern Equatorial Pacific to Radiative Forcing

Chanyoung Park et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the heating effect in the Eastern Pacific leads to amplified warming in the central Pacific, while the feedback mechanisms in the Western Pacific result in an El Nino-like warming pattern. The inter-model spread of the future tropical Pacific surface warming pattern can be explained by the ocean heat uptake response in the east.

Characteristics and Drivers of Marine Heatwaves in the Western Equatorial Indian Ocean

Ruisi Qi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial-temporal characteristics of marine heatwaves (MHWs) in the western equatorial Indian Ocean (WEIO) using satellite observations. Results reveal a prominent MHW hotspot in the WEIO, with significant interannual variability linked to Indo-Pacific climate modes. The occurrence of MHWs in the hotspot is influenced by anomalous equatorial and off-equatorial Rossby waves, driven by easterly winds and reflecting wave propagation, respectively. The frequency, duration, and total days of MHWs in the hotspot region have increased due to global warming.

Drivers and characteristics of the Indo-western Pacific Ocean capacitor

Yan Du et al.

Summary: Coherently coupled ocean-atmosphere variability in tropical Indo-Pacific Oceans is responsible for the predictability of Asian summer climate. This study reviews recent advances in the Indo-western Pacific Ocean capacitor (IPOC) theory and its relationship with El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). It is found that IPOC events often occur in post-ENSO summers, and significant warming in the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) can sustain anomalous anticyclonic circulation over the western North Pacific (WNPAAC). This circulation pattern drives water vapor transport to East Asia and leads to extreme events, such as heavy rainfalls in central China and Japan during the boreal summer.

Summary: A global assessment of coastal MHWs using an ensemble approach reveals an increase in frequency and duration over the past 25 years, with main driver being long-term changes in mean SST. Differences in MHW mean intensity between products suggest sensitivity to specific SST data sets and emphasize the need for an ensemble approach in MHW analysis.

The decadal sea level variability observed in the Indian Ocean tide gauge records and its association with global climate modes

J. S. Deepa et al.

Summary: The study found a close association between decadal sea level variability in the Indian Ocean and global decadal climate modes, particularly with the PDO and AMO. The sea level in regions like the west coast of India, east coast of India, and west coast of Australia shows an anti-phase evolution with the PDO index. Furthermore, the relationship between sea level variability and the AMO index is stronger in certain locations, such as Mumbai, than in others like Fremantle, suggesting spatial variations in the impact of these climate modes.

Sea Surface Salinity Change since 1950: Internal Variability versus Anthropogenic Forcing

Qiwei Sun et al.

Summary: The POGA experiment successfully simulated the observed variability of sea surface salinity (SSS) in the eastern tropical Pacific. The long-term trend in SSS shows salty regions becoming saltier and fresh regions becoming fresher, modulated by the interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO). Decadal variability in the tropical Pacific has led to regional discrepancies in the estimation of radiative-forced trends, highlighting the importance of understanding internal variability in SSS trends.

Historic Yangtze flooding of 2020 tied to extreme Indian Ocean conditions

Zhen-Qiang Zhou et al.

Summary: The record strong Indian Ocean Dipole event in 2019 played a key role in the severe flooding of the Yangtze River in 2020 by deepening the thermocline and warming the Indian Ocean. This led to anomalous anticyclone in the lower troposphere over the Indo-Northwest Pacific region and intensified the upper-level westerly jet over East Asia, causing heavy summer rainfall in the Yangtze Basin.

Extreme IOD induced tropical Indian Ocean warming in 2020

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: The tropical Indian Ocean basin experienced warming in 2020 due to an extreme positive Indian Ocean Dipole event, rather than an El Nino event. The study highlights the role of the extreme IOD event in triggering the warming pattern in the TIO basin, which was influenced by factors such as thermocline-SST feedback and wind anomalies. Additionally, equatorially antisymmetric SST, precipitation, and surface wind patterns also played a role in the warming process.
