Upper Cretaceous European theropod palaeobiodiversity, palaeobiogeography and the intra-Maastrichtian faunal turnover: new contributions from the Iberian fossil site of Lano

Erik Isasmendi et al.

Summary: A total of 227 theropod teeth have been recovered from the Lano site, making it the richest and most diverse latest Cretaceous theropod site in Europe. The sample includes medium to large abelisaurids, small coelurosaurians, and a large terrestrial bird. The findings suggest multiple dispersal events of theropods during the Cretaceous, resulting in a mixture of European endemic, Asiamerican, and Gondwanan forms.

A titanosaurian sauropod with Gondwanan affinities in the latest Cretaceous of Europe

Bernat Vila et al.

Summary: This article describes a new titanosaurian sauropod dinosaur, Abditosaurus kuehnei, found in Late Cretaceous Spain. It is placed in a clade separate from other European titanosaurs, grouped with South American and African saltasaurines. The co-occurrence with Gondwanan titanosaurian species in southern Europe suggests a connection with southern landmasses. The size and osteohistological features support the idea that Abditosaurus belongs to an immigrant lineage distinct from European island dwarfs. The study hypothesizes that Abditosaurus arrived in the Ibero-Armorican Island during the earliest Maastrichtian as a result of a sea-level drop between Africa and Europe.

Progressive opening of a shallow-marine bay (Oliete Subbasin, Spain) and the record of possible eustatic fall events near the Barremian-Aptian boundary

A. Garcia-Penas et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the Alac'on Formation in the Oliete subbasin of the Maestrazgo Basin in Spain to understand the formation of a shallow-marine bay on the northeastern margin of Iberia. The study reveals that the sequence architecture was mainly controlled by climatic and eustatic sea-level oscillations, with local synsedimentary tectonics having a minor impact.

Charophytes from the Upper Cretaceous Castilian marine ramp and continental basins (central northern Spain): Fossil assemblages and depositional environments

Monique Feist et al.

Summary: This paper presents the charophyte-bearing sites in the Upper Cretaceous sedimentary series of the Castilian marine ramp and continental basins in central northern Spain. It lists the recognized charophyte taxa and describes the sedimentary sequences in which the charophytes were found to reconstruct their depositional environments. The study reveals that the charophyte fossils are mainly distributed in sites formed during episodes of emersion and terrestrial conditions, as well as in restricted continental basins developed after the Campanian-Maastrichtian boundary. Furthermore, the fossiliferous sites from the Campanian-Maastrichtian allow for floristic and biostratigraphic correlations with charophyte floras from Catalonia and the Serrania de Cuenca.

The Tetrapod Fossil Record from the Uppermost Maastrichtian of the Ibero-Armorican Island: An Integrative Review Based on the Outcrops of the Western Tremp Syncline (Aragon, Huesca Province, NE Spain)

Manuel Perez-Pueyo et al.

Summary: The South-Pyrenean Basin in northeastern Spain has a diverse record of Upper Cretaceous vertebrate fossils, including the remains of some of the last European dinosaurs before the K-Pg extinction event. The Western Tremp Syncline in the Aragonese area of the Southern Pyrenees contains sedimentary units dated to the late Maastrichtian, with fossil remains of dinosaurs, crocodylomorphs, pterosaurs, and other tetrapods. This site is one of the best places in Europe to study the latest vertebrate assemblages before the end-Cretaceous mass extinction.
