An Integrated Modeling Approach for Analyzing the Deformation Style of Active Volcanoes: Somma-Vesuvius Case Study

Ada De Matteo et al.

Summary: The deformation style of the Somma-Vesuvius volcano has been a matter of debate. With the use of analog experiments and finite element modeling, this study provides insight into the current state of deformation and confirms that a combined gravitational spreading-sagging process governs the deformation style of Somma-Vesuvius. This research is of great importance for risk reduction and understanding the structural evolution of active volcanoes.

Mechanical properties of quartz sand and gypsum powder (plaster) mixtures: Implications for laboratory model analogues for the Earth's upper crust

Sam Poppe et al.

Summary: By using various mechanical tests to constrain the failure envelope of sand-plaster mixtures, it was found that the mechanical behavior of the mixtures shifts with increasing plaster content, resulting in changes in cohesion and friction coefficients.

The Ground Deformation History of the Neapolitan Volcanic Area (Campi Flegrei Caldera, Somma-Vesuvius Volcano, and Ischia Island) from 20 Years of Continuous GPS Observations (2000-2019)

Prospero De Martino et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of the recent activity in the Neapolitan volcanic area, focusing on the three active and high-risk volcanoes. Continuous GPS observations have allowed for accurate tracking of ground deformation patterns from 2000 to 2019, providing valuable data for volcano dynamics research and hazard assessment.
