Aftershock sequence of the 2017 Mw 6.5 Jiuzhaigou, China earthquake monitored by an AsA network and its implication to fault structures and strength

Weifan Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, a seismic network was deployed near the source region of the 2017 Jiuzhaigou earthquake to monitor aftershock activity and investigate the fault structure. The results show that the main shock possibly ruptured both the Huya fault and the Minjiang fault, and a "weak strength" fault portion was identified near the main shock hypocentre. This study provides valuable insights into the fault geometry and behavior of the Jiuzhaigou earthquake.

Coseismic and early post-seismic deformations due to the 2019 earthquake sequence in Ridgecrest, California

Kefeng He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the coseismic and post-seismic deformations of the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake sequence using space geodetic data. The results show a pronounced shallow slip deficit during the earthquake, with most of the post-seismic slip occurring at depths of 3-8 km. Viscosity modeling suggests a lower bound of approximately 8.0 x 10(17) Pa s for the upper mantle viscosity, and reveals lateral heterogeneous relaxation processes in the northeast and southwest ECSZ.

Summary: Studying the variation of stress on faults is crucial for understanding fault friction and earthquake ruptures. This study uses a new geodetic imaging technique to measure the 3D coseismic slip vectors along the 2019 Ridgecrest surface ruptures and provides insights into the static and dynamic fault friction.

Postseismic Process Inversion Using Full Time Series of Surface Deformation: Full Time-Series Inversion (FTI) Theory and Its Application to the 2017 Sarpol-e Zahab Earthquake

Han Yue et al.

Summary: Postseismic processes provide important opportunities to study the properties of seismogenic faults and the surrounding Earth media. This study introduces a full time-series inversion (FTI) technique, which combines Global Navigation Satellite System, SAR, and strainmeter data to invert for afterslip patterns. FTI outperforms static inversion techniques in terms of stability, even in high noise levels. The technique is successfully applied to investigate the afterslip process following the 2017 Iran-Iraq earthquake, and it demonstrates the ability to differentiate afterslip with different evolution functions.

Thin creme brulee rheological structure for the Eastern California Shear Zone

Shaozhuo Liu et al.

Summary: Research on postseismic deformation after the 1992 Landers and 1999 Hector Mine earthquakes in the Mojave Desert has shown that the near-field postseismic transients lasted longer than expected, leading to a revision of postseismic modeling. New models suggest that the lower crust in the Mojave region has a similar effective viscosity to the underlying mantle asthenosphere, and the transient viscosity of the upper mantle increases over time, supporting frequency-dependent rheology theories. These findings also align with rheological characteristics observed in the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquakes.

Physical conditions and frictional properties in the source region of a slow-slip event

Adrien F. Arnulf et al.

Summary: Seismic imaging and data-constrained modelling reveal lateral variability in elastic properties and pore pressure, as well as near-velocity-neutral frictional properties in a shallow slow-slip source region along the Hikurangi subduction margin. The study suggests that fluid flow along thrust faults plays a crucial role in influencing mechanical properties and frictional stability along the subduction fault. This research also indicates that shallow subduction fault rocks must exhibit nearly velocity-neutral properties to generate shallow frictional slow slip events.

Bayesian Inversion for a Stress-Driven Model of Afterslip and Viscoelastic Relaxation: Method and Application to Postseismic Deformation Following the 2011 MW 9.0 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake

Junichi Fukuda et al.

Summary: A method for estimating the parameters of postseismic deformation models following great subduction earthquakes was developed, incorporating afterslip and viscoelastic relaxation mechanisms. Bayesian formulation and algorithm were used to estimate the posterior probability density function, allowing for quantification of uncertainties in the model parameters. Application to the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake showed tight constraints on the model parameters, effectively reproducing spatial and temporal patterns of postseismic deformation.

Summary: The study of the Ridgecrest earthquake sequence in July 2019 revealed interactions between foreshocks, mainshocks, and aftershocks, providing insights into the kinematic rupture models and slip patterns on fault segments. The results show a cascade migration of foreshocks triggering the mainshock, as well as complementary slip patterns on different faults during the seismic and aseismic periods.

Ridgecrest aftershocks at Coso suppressed by thermal destressing

Kyungjae Im et al.

Summary: Thirty years of geothermal heat production at Coso in California depleted shear stresses within the geothermal reservoir, changing its faulting style and inhibiting aftershocks from the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake. This destressing phenomenon impacted the faulting style of the reservoir and impeded aftershock triggering, potentially impeding the propagation of a large earthquake.
