Evolution of co-seismic off-fault damage towards pulverisation

Giles A. Ostermeijer et al.

Summary: This article studies the pulverisation of rocks along the San Andreas Fault and the Borrego Fault. It introduces a classification method for pulverisation intensity based on field observations and proposes a damage-evolution model to explain the heterogeneous pulverisation intensity on mature faults.

Evolution of Pulverized Fault Zone Rocks by Dynamic Tensile Loading During Successive Earthquakes

Zachary D. Smith et al.

Summary: This study investigates the development of off-fault damage through successive tensile loading. The results show that fracture density increases during each earthquake cycle, and pulverized rock can be produced at low strain rates.

Late Quaternary faulting in the southern Matese (Italy): implications for earthquake potential and slip rate variability in the southern Apennines

Paolo Boncio et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed analysis of the Gioia Sannitica active normal fault along the southern Matese fault system in the Apennines of Italy. The current activity and seismic potential of the fault system were previously underestimated. The study reveals the long active history, varied slip rates, and potential for strong earthquakes of the fault system.

Exhumation and erosion of the Northern Apennines, Italy: new insights from low-temperature thermochronometers

Erica D. Erlanger et al.

Summary: The analysis of new detrital apatite fission-track (AFT) ages, published bedrock and detrital AFT ages, as well as bedrock apatite (U-Th)/He (AHe) ages from the Northern Apennines provides new insights into the temporal and spatial patterns of erosion rates across the orogen. The results show slower erosion rates on the Ligurian side compared to the AFT rates from the Ligurian side and the AHe rates from the Adriatic side. Pairing AFT and AHe thermochronometer samples further confirms that erosion rates have generally increased through time on the Adriatic side but have decreased on the Ligurian side. Using an updated kinematic model, the study demonstrates that cooling ages and maximum burial depths can replicate the measured cooling ages and estimated burial depths, suggesting that horizontal motion plays a significant role in the overall rock motion and that the asymmetry of the orogen has existed for several million years.

3D Numerical Simulations of Non-Volcanic CO2 Degassing in Active Fault Zones Based on Geophysical Surveys

R. Di Maio et al.

Summary: An integrated approach combining geophysical surveys and numerical simulations is proposed to study fluid flow along active fault zones. By establishing an accurate 3D petrophysical model based on different data constraints, the method was tested in an active fault zone in southern Italy, showing promising results for forecasting possible critical variations in CO2 emissions near faults.

Summary: Fluids play a crucial role in seismic faulting, both during earthquake nucleation and rupture propagation. The study reveals that anomalies in crustal fluid circulation may serve as potential precursors to strong earthquakes, shedding light on the mechanisms involving fluids in seismic events.
