From microanalysis to supercontinents: Insights from the Rio Apa Terrane into the Mesoproterozoic SW Amazonian Craton evolution during Rodinia assembly

Bruno Ribeiro et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of four tectono-metamorphic events in the Rio Apa Terrane, occurring at approximately 1,780, 1,625, 1,420-1,340, and 1,300-1,200 Ma. These events indicate a progressive high-pressure/medium-temperature metamorphic sequence, along with collisions and accretions with adjacent terranes at different time periods.

Dissolution precipitation creep as a process for the strain localisation in mafic rocks

Amicia L. Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigates the significant role of dissolution-precipitation creep in the deformation of gabbro bodies under upper amphibolite facies conditions. The research reveals that original minerals dissolved and precipitated as new mineral phases, indicating that dissolution-precipitation creep is the dominant deformation mechanism. Furthermore, the fluid-assisted transformation process facilitates diffusion creep at lower stresses and temperatures.

Linking titanite U-Pb dates to coupled deformation and dissolution-reprecipitation

Amy C. Moser et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dating of deformation and fluid-driven recrystallization using titanite U-Pb dates, trace elements, zoning, and microstructures in a calc-silicate gneiss along the Coast shear zone. The results show that deformation microstructures enhance fluid-mediated recrystallization, but also decouple U-Pb dates from trace-element concentrations. This study demonstrates the complexity of fluid and deformation processes within and among individual grains.

On the petrology and microstructures of small-scale ductile shear zones in granitoid rocks: An overview

Alberto Ceccato et al.

Summary: The study of small-scale shear zones in granitoid rocks provides valuable insights into strain localization processes in the continental crust. Through field, microstructural and petrological analyses, researchers have identified the temperature range (450-500°C) and conditions that promote the nucleation and development of shear zones. The evolution of shear zones in granitoid rocks is influenced by metamorphic reactions, fluid interactions, and mineralogical changes, which in turn affect rheology and fabric evolution. Future research should focus on understanding the feedback processes between deformation, metamorphism, and metasomatism to quantify the evolution of shear zones over time.

Structural and chemical resetting processes in white mica and their effect on K-Ar data during low temperature metamorphism

Ismay Venice Akker et al.

Summary: White mica is commonly used for radiogenic dating in faults, but complexities in microstructural and chemical evolution, mixing of grains, and volume diffusion can result in inaccurate K-Ar ages. Studying specimens from European Alpine accretionary wedge sheds light on resetting processes of white mica and shows that increasing recrystallization with higher metamorphic grade can affect the isotopic system. The importance of recrystallization as a physico-chemical process for age resetting is highlighted, with reliable age information only achievable through complete resetting of the smallest grain fraction at peak metamorphic conditions.

In-situ Lu-Hf geochronology of garnet, apatite and xenotime by LA ICP MS/MS

Alexander Simpson et al.

Summary: Lu-Hf geochronology is a powerful method for constraining the temporal evolution of geological systems, with traditional methods requiring time-consuming chemical separations and potentially losing the textural context of analysed minerals. In contrast, the in-situ approach offers rapid analysis with high spatial resolution, but is hindered by isobaric interferences of Yb-176 and Lu-176 on Hf-176.
