Long-lived cyclometallated iridium complexes: Synthesis, structure, DFT and photocatalytic aspects

Paltan Laha et al.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis, photophysical, and photocatalytic properties of four mononuclear luminescent iridium complexes. The complexes exhibit moderately good luminescent behavior with emission in the orangered region and show efficacy towards azo dye degradation in aqueous solution through the generation of reactive species under light irradiation.

Tuning the emission maxima of iridium systems using benzimidazole-based cyclometallating framework

Paltan Laha et al.

Summary: In this study, four mononuclear cyclometallated iridium complexes [1](PF6) - [4](PF6) were developed using alkyl chain appended benzimidazole-based cyclometallating ligands (L-1 and L-2). The complexes were characterized and their crystal structures revealed the distorted octahedral geometry around the iridium center. The complexes exhibited emissive properties with emission maxima dependent on the substituent present on the ligand framework. Tuning emission maxima by variation of substitution holds great importance in developing luminescent materials.

Polysubstituted Ligand Framework for Color Tuning Phosphorescent Iridium(III) Complexes

Sophie A. Fitzgerald et al.

Summary: A series of ligands have been synthesized based upon a polysubstituted 2-phenylquinoxaline core structure, with different combinations of fluorine and methyl substituents. These ligands were investigated as cyclometalating agents for Ir(III) and displayed tunable luminescence properties with MLCT contributions to the lowest energy absorption.

Excited-State Engineering in Heteroleptic Ionic Iridium(III) Complexes

Filippo Monti et al.

Summary: Iridium(III) complexes play a significant role in photochemistry and photophysics due to their stability and emissive properties. The heavy-atom effect of iridium promotes singlet-triplet transitions, with the complexes exhibiting metal-centered, ligand-centered, or charge transfer properties in the excited state. The design of ligands allows for fine tuning of the electronic properties, making iridium(III) complexes a valuable tool in optoelectronic devices.

Dual-Emissive Tris-Heteroleptic Ruthenium Complexes: Tuning the DNA-Triggered Ratiometric Emission Response by Ancillary Ligands

Si-Hai Wu et al.

Summary: Three tris-heteroleptic mononuclear Ru(II) complexes with dual fluorescence and phosphorescence were designed and used as ratiometric light-response probes for DNA, where two of the complexes exhibited stronger preference for calf thymus DNA. The interactions of these complexes with different DNAs were investigated by various methods, including spectroscopy and molecular modeling, providing valuable insights for potential applications in DNA sensing.

Dual emissive dinuclear Pt(II) complexes and application to singlet oxygen generation

Marsel Z. Shafikov et al.

Summary: Room-temperature dual emission combining fluorescence and phosphorescence is useful for ratiometric sensing materials. Pt(II) complexes 1 and 2 exhibit green fluorescence and near infrared phosphorescence with potential for dioxygen sensing. The large energy gap and slow intersystem crossing contribute to the efficiency of singlet oxygen photosensitization.

Red to near-infrared phosphorescent Ir(iii) complexes with electron-rich chelating ligands

Sungwon Yoon et al.

Summary: This article discusses advances in the design of molecular phosphors that phosphoresce in the red to near-infrared regions, focusing on cyclometalated iridium complexes. The introduction of electron-rich, nitrogen-containing ancillary ligands has allowed for record-breaking phosphorescence quantum yields. The study covers insights gained on the relationships between molecular structure, frontier orbital energies, and excited-state dynamics across three distinct regions of the spectrum.

Dual emission from an iridium(III) complex/counter anion ion pair

Wataru Ito et al.

Summary: The complex [Ir(tpy)(2)](PF6)(3) exhibited dual color luminescent emission in CH3CN, with blue and green emissions attributed to cation and ion pair emissions, supported by TD-DFT calculations. On the other hand, [Ir(tpy)(2)]I-3 in CH3CN showed emissions solely from the cation, while crystalline [Ir(tpy)(2)]I-3 exhibited red luminescence inconsistent with cation emissions, with TD-DFT calculations supporting a charge-transfer transition hypothesis.
