Near-infrared vinyl-containing aza-BODIPY nanoparticles as photosensitizer for phototherapy

Yanyan Wang et al.

Summary: A novel vinyl-containing pyrrole compound was developed through the reaction of vinyl-containing ketones with 3-phenyl-2H-azirine in the presence of LDA. This compound was then used to prepare asymmetric vinyl-containing azaBDPs 1-8, avoiding the use of Knoevenagel condensation. Among them, the formed azaBDP nanoparticles (7-NPs) exhibited excellent photothermal stabilities and a high photothermal conversion efficiency (eta = 55%) in the aza-BODIPY system, effectively killing cancer cells through photothermal conversion, showing potential as a tumor phototherapeutic agent.

A rhodol-derived probe for intracellular biothiols imaging and rapid labelling of sulfhydryl-containing proteins

Shiyue Zheng et al.

Summary: Biological thiols play a crucial role in biological processes, and the development of a probe capable of targeting and imaging these thiols in living cells, as well as rapidly labeling them in proteins, is highly desired. In this study, a probe called FRB-T containing alpha, beta-unsaturated ketones was designed and synthesized. It demonstrated high specificity towards thiols, and exhibited remarkable fluorescence enhancement and color changes upon reaction with thiols. The probe was also successfully applied for biothiol imaging in Hela cells, and enabled rapid labeling of sulfhydryl-containing proteins without the need for a washing step.

Zhaoye Lv et al.

Summary: Fluorescein derivatives with TADF show stronger competition ability and wider prospects compared to traditional fluorescein dyes due to their long lifetime. Compounds DCF-MPYA and FL were obtained with TADF properties by fine-tuning substituents' structure. They exhibit red fluorescence, long lifetimes, sensitivity to oxygen and heavy atoms, suitable for confocal and time-resolved fluorescence imaging.

Synthesis and characterization of aryl-substituted BODIPY dyes displaying distinct solvatochromic singlet oxygen photosensitization efficiencies

Raquel C. R. Goncalves et al.

Summary: The study found that a BODIPY derivative showed a significant enhancement in singlet oxygen sensitization quantum yield with the decrease of solvent dielectric constant. Triplet state formation for the derivative was mediated by intramolecular charge transfer state in toluene, while hindered by fast recombination of the ICT state in polar solvents. The photoinduced dynamics of the BODIPY derivatives were characterized from femtosecond to nanosecond time scale using pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy.

Fluorescent probes for biothiols based on metal complex

Wenjuan Liu et al.

Summary: Biothiols are small molecules with vital physiological functions, and their detection is mainly achieved by changing the fluorescence emission of fluorophores through the nucleophilic reaction ability of sulfhydryl groups. In recent years, many fluorescent probes recognizing biothiols based on the coordination ability of sulfhydryl groups and metals have been reported. The review of progress in this field is deemed timely and essential.

Synthesis of pH-sensitive benzothiazole cyanine dye derivatives containing a pyridine moiety at the meso position

Wheeler R. Lovett et al.

Summary: In this study, four benzothiazole-derived dyes with pyridine moieties were synthesized as prospective pH-responsive probes. These dyes exhibited absorption and emission in the far-red range of the visible spectrum and showed changes in their spectral properties when exposed to hydrochloric acid, indicating their potential as pH probes. Computational studies further confirmed the influence of pyridine on the spectral properties of these dyes.

Effects of silver nanoclusters on the spectral properties for fluorescein isothiocyanate with restrained photobleaching

Pengyuan Shan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the energy transfer process between silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) with different emission wavelengths and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC). It shows that FITC can act as an electron donor or acceptor, determining the direction of electron transfer between FITC and Ag NCs with different emissions. Additionally, the interaction with Ag NCs effectively inhibits the photo bleaching of FITC, which has significant implications for the application of FITC.

Synthesis and fluorescence properties of red-to-near-infrared-emitting push-pull dyes based on benzodioxazole scaffolds

Liu Yang et al.

Summary: A new class of red-to-near-infrared-emitting small molecular dyes called VBDfluors have been developed, demonstrating excellent photophysical properties and cell permeability. By introducing electron-withdrawing group-substituted vinyl groups, the conjugation system was extended to achieve bathochromic shift of both absorption and emission wavelengths. The optimized molecular geometry using density functional theory and time-dependent DFT methods showed promising results for bioimaging applications.
