Do Lower-Carbohydrate Diets Increase Total Energy Expenditure? An Updated and Reanalyzed Meta-Analysis of 29 Controlled-Feeding Studies

David S. Ludwig et al.

Summary: The study found that lower-carbohydrate diets can temporarily reduce TEE in the short term, but there is a larger increase after approximately 2.5 weeks. These results highlight the importance of longer trials in understanding the chronic effects of macronutrients, and suggest a mechanism whereby lower-carbohydrate diets may facilitate weight loss.

Obeticholic acid ameliorates obesity and hepatic steatosis by activating brown fat

Hanlin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that obeticholic acid (OCA) functions as a BAT activator to help ameliorate obesity and maintain glucose homeostasis in db/db mice through enhancing BAT activity. This provides a potential therapeutic approach to activate brown fat in patients with obesity and other metabolic disorders.

β3-Adrenergic receptors regulate human brown/beige adipocyte lipolysis and thermogenesis

Cheryl Cero et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the critical role of β(3)-AR in regulating lipolysis and thermogenesis in human brown/beige adipocytes. Silencing of β(3)-AR compromised multiple components of cellular machinery essential for thermogenesis and fatty acid metabolism. Selective human β(3)-AR agonists could potentially offer metabolic benefits in humans.
