Multi-objective optimization of a renewable power supply system with underwater compressed air energy storage for seawater reverse osmosis under two different operation schemes

Pan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study focused on water supply in rural islands or coastal areas, proposing a renewable driven power supply system for RO plants and conducting a multi-objective optimization analysis of energy, economic, and environmental factors. The results showed that the optimal grid-connected scheme had considerable economic profit, while the off-grid scheme had no revenue. Both schemes, however, could significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Seawater dilution desalination with hybrid FO-RO and UF-RO: Characterisation and assessment of pathogen removal efficacy

P. Pazouki et al.

Summary: This study explored the feasibility of incorporating two low-energy dilution desalination processes into a conventional seawater desalination approach using real seawater and recycled wastewater. The results showed that mixing dilution of influent feed waters reduced the number of pathogenic contaminants and organic/inorganic compounds. The osmotic dilution desalination (ODD) process with the FO membrane was more effective in removing viruses and bacterial indicators compared to the mixing dilution desalination (MDD) process with the UF membrane.

Reclaiming wastewater with increasing salinity for potable water reuse: Water recovery and energy consumption during reverse osmosis desalination

Xin Wei et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the energy consumed in recovering water from higher-salinity streams and considers various energy-saving strategies. The energy savings was greater for closed-circuit reverse osmosis as influent salinity increases. The energy savings from desalinating higher-salinity streams separately increased as the salinity difference between the two streams increased.

Multi-criteria decision-making model for optimal planning of on/off grid hybrid solar, wind, hydro, biomass clean electricity supply

Zia Ullah et al.

Summary: This paper presents an integrated decision-making approach for optimal planning of a 100% renewable energy supply system in a rural area of Pakistan, considering a variety of sustainability criteria. The results reveal that the solar-hydro-biomass battery is the top-ranking off-grid system, while the solar-hydro-battery is the most appropriate design when the hybrid system is connected to the grid. The developed approach offers valuable benchmark and guidelines for investors and stakeholders in the energy industry to promote the high dissemination of renewables.

Pirooz Pazouki et al.

Summary: The study compared the conventional SWRO desalination process with two contemporary low-pressure membrane desalination processes, finding that environmental impacts are highly dependent on the clean in place process in dilution desalination systems, while energy flow plays a significant role in standalone RO systems. Overall, the ODD process with FO-RO hybrid membrane technology had the highest environmental impact.
