N-heterocyclic carbene coordinated metal nanoparticles and nanoclusters

Hui Shen et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the recent research advances in the use of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) as stabilizing agents and functionality modifiers for metal nanoparticles (NPs) and nanoclusters (NCs). It discusses the development of effective strategies for decorating metal NPs with NHCs and the improvements in catalytic performances achieved through NHC ligation on heterogeneous metal nanocatalysts. The review also highlights the synthesis of atomically precise NHC-stabilized metal NCs and their crystallographic structure analysis, which contribute to a better understanding of the carbene-metal interface at the atomic level. The review concludes with personal perspectives on the future development of this promising field.

Simple and Selective Synthesis of Copper-Containing Metal Nanoclusters Using (PPh3)2CuBH4 as Reducing Agent

Hui Shen et al.

Summary: A simple and selective synthetic protocol using (PPh3)(2)CuBH(4) as a reducing agent for Cu-containing mixed metal nanoclusters has been reported. The method demonstrates versatility, high yield, and high purity of the products, and may open the door to utilizing functional metal borohydride as a new generation of reducing agent for the synthesis of metal nanoclusters.

Alkynyl-Stabilized Superatomic Silver Clusters Showing Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Miao-Miao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new enantiomeric pair of superatomic silver clusters, R/S-Ag-17, prepared from chiral alkynyl ligands, which exhibit near-infrared emission and circularly polarized luminescence. Experimental and theoretical evidence suggest that the CPL originates from transitions between superatomic 1P(z) and 1S orbitals. This work paves the way for the development of CPL-active metal nanoclusters utilizing chiral ligands and demonstrates the transfer of chirality from protecting ligands to superatomic states in metal clusters.

A homoleptic alkynyl-protected [Ag9Cu6(tBuCC)12]+ superatom with free electrons: synthesis, structure analysis, and different properties compared with the Au7Ag8 cluster in the M15+ series

Xiaoshuang Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, the first homoleptic alkynyl-protected AgCu superatomic nanocluster was reported, along with a similar structure bimetallic nanocluster. Despite the similar Ag-8 cube structure, subtle differences exist between the two clusters, resulting in significantly different optical absorbance features.

The [Ag25Cu4H8Br6(CCPh)12(PPh3)12]3+: Ag13H8 silver hydride core protected by [CuAg3(CCPh)3(PPh3)3]+ motifs

Kaiyu Mikami et al.

Summary: Copper alkynyl complexes were used as a protecting unit to cover the metal core of an atomically precise core-shell-type cluster, which was successfully synthesized and characterized. The specific copper alkynyl complexes used in the study were prepared using the method for preparing the protecting unit, allowing for the successful synthesis of core-shell-type clusters.
