A rare cadmium-containing windmill-like heteropolyoxoniobate macrocycle with stable 1-D cyclic cluster aggregates has been successfully synthesized. The compound exhibited promising basic catalytic ability for Knoevenagel condensation with high yield and cycling stability under mild reaction conditions. The theoretical calculation suggests that the dense and stronger basic sites of the surface terminal O atoms contribute to its excellent catalytic ability.
