Atomistic modeling of interface strengthening in Al-Si eutectic alloys

Wenqian Wu et al.

Summary: Al-Si cast alloys composed of alpha-Al and Al-Si eutectic often do not show significant improvement in mechanical properties due to Si flakes. The weak strengthening effect of Si flakes may be attributed to the low shear resistance and easy interaction of dislocations with Al-Si interfaces, leading to a decrease in the repulsive force on approaching dislocations and weakening the strengthening effect of Si flakes.

Evading strength and ductility trade-off in an inverse nacre structured magnesium matrix nanocomposite

Xi Luo et al.

Summary: The study proposes an innovative strategy called inverse nacre structure, which embeds elongated and curled soft constituents in a matrix of hard constituent to create an ordered brick-and-mortar arrangement. This strategy has been applied in a particle reinforced metal matrix composite, resulting in a nanocomposite with high strength and especially high tensile elongation. The tailored inverse nacre structure contributes to a stable microcrack-multiplication process, promoting strain hardening and maintaining the post-ultimate tensile strength. This strategy is not limited to specific materials and offers a generic pathway for developing high-performance materials for engineering applications.

An atomistic-to-microscale computational analysis of the dislocation pileup-induced local stresses near an interface in plastically deformed two-phase materials

Yipeng Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, atomistic-to-microscale computational analysis was performed on a two-phase material to investigate the formation of dislocation pileup at a buried interface. The simultaneous resolution of dislocation slip, pileup-induced stress complexity, and atomic-level interface structure evolution was achieved in a single model. The findings reveal that the internal stresses induced by pileup can span a range of hundreds of nanometers, and the resulting stress concentration decays with distance, deviating from the Eshelby model. Moreover, the stress intensity factor at a pileup tip is linearly proportional to the nearby dislocation density only when a few dislocations are involved, but it significantly increases when tens of or more dislocations arrive at the interface.

Plastic deformation induced microstructure transition in nano-fibrous Al-Si eutectics

Huai-Hsun Lien et al.

Summary: The indentation plastic zone of Al-20 wt% Si laser rapid solidified (LRS) alloy with nanoscale, fibrous, fully eutectic microstructure was characterized using AFM, SEM, and S/TEM. The LRS nano-fibrous eutectic microstructure exhibited higher strength, strain-hardening, and uniformly distributed plasticity around indents without cracking. The morphology transition from long to short nano-fibrous Si was observed underneath the indent in LRS eutectics.

Strong yet ductile nanolamellar high-entropy alloys by additive manufacturing

Jie Ren et al.

Summary: Through laser powder bed fusion, we have successfully printed dual-phase nanolamellar high-entropy alloys with high yield strength and large uniform elongation. The high yield strength is attributed to the dual-phase structure consisting of alternating face-centred cubic and body-centred cubic nanolamellae, while the large tensile ductility arises from the high work-hardening capability of the dual-phase nanolamellae embedded in microscale eutectic colonies.

Deformation behavior of nanoscale Al-Al2Cu eutectics studied by in situ micropillar compression

Summary: The study revealed that the deformation behavior of nanoscale laser processed Al-Al2Cu eutectics is greatly influenced by the loading orientation, with different mechanisms observed for parallel, inclined, and normal loading. Decreasing inter-lamellar spacing led to increased strength and more uniform plasticity distribution, with the highest compressive plasticity observed in polycrystalline eutectics with an average spacing of 20 nm.

Strength and plasticity of lamellar vs. fibrous eutectic Mg-Al nanocomposites: An in-situ microcompression study

Soodabeh Azadehranjbar et al.

Summary: Magnesium alloys are appealing for automotive and aerospace applications due to their low density and high strength-to-weight ratio. However, their current use is limited by low strength and poor formability at ambient temperatures. Two-phase nanostructured materials offer a promising solution to enhance the mechanical properties of magnesium alloys, with either fibrous or lamellar morphologies formed via eutectic transformation. During mechanical testing, the lamellar morphology showed superior strength and plasticity compared to the fibrous morphology and pure magnesium. The higher strength in the fibrous eutectic came at the expense of lower plasticity, while the high plasticity of the lamellar morphology was attributed to factors such as high dislocation activity and role of alpha layers in restricting shear instabilities.

Surprising increase in yield stress of Mg single crystal using long-period stacking ordered nanoplates

Koji Hagihara et al.

Summary: Ternary alloys containing long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase exhibit superior mechanical properties due to the strengthening effect of LPSO phase. The matrix Mg solid solution in Mg/LPSO two-phase alloy has different mechanical properties compared to pure Mg, with the formation of LPSO nanoplate contributing to high strength. The results suggest that new ultrahigh-strength Mg alloys with lower Zn and Y contents but comparable or superior mechanical properties are expected to be developed by controlling LPSO nanoplate microstructures.

In situ characterization of tensile behavior of laser rapid solidified Al-Si heterogeneous microstructures

Bingqiang Wei et al.

Summary: In situ tension tests showed that the heterogeneous Al-Si microstructure produced through laser rapid solidification of as-cast Al-20wt.%Si alloy exhibited high tensile strength, ductility, and strain hardening rate. The study revealed plastic co-deformation mechanisms between soft Al dendrites and hard nanoscale Al-Si eutectic, with the progression of plasticity in nanoscale Al-Si eutectic being accommodated by dislocation plasticity and cracking in Si nanofibers. The suppression of nano-crack propagation by surrounding Al contributed to the retention of good ductility in the sample.
