The Neutrophil to Lymphocyte Ratio in Poststroke Infection: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Shokoufeh Khanzadeh et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is significantly higher in stroke patients with poststroke infection (PSI), particularly poststroke pneumonia (PSP) compared to stroke patients without infection. However, NLR is not a reliable predictor for urinary tract infection, sepsis, or ventriculitis in stroke patients.

Low serum transthyretin levels predict stroke-associated pneumonia

Huihua Qiu et al.

Summary: This study found that low transthyretin levels significantly increased the risk of stroke-associated pneumonia and were independently associated with the development of SAP. Patients with SAP had worse clinical outcomes at discharge, and factors such as dysphagia, leukocyte count, and NLR were also found to be associated with SAP.

SDL Index Predicts Stroke-Associated Pneumonia in Patients After Endovascular Therapy

Bowei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study developed a novel SDL index to predict SAP risk in acute ischemic stroke patients post endovascular treatment, showing good discrimination in both derivation and validation cohorts. The SDL index proved to be well-calibrated and outperformed two existing SAP prediction models.

Prediction of stroke-associated pneumonia by the A2DS2, AIS-APS, and ISAN scores: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Jianchao Ni et al.

Summary: In this meta-analysis, we included 19 studies with a total of 35,849 patients to assess the predictive accuracy of A2DS2, AISAPS, and ISAN scores for SAP. The results showed that these scores have moderate predictive accuracy for SAP, with A2DS2 having a stable cutoff value.

Usefulness of the Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio as a Predictor of Pneumonia and Urinary Tract Infection Within the First Week After Acute Ischemic Stroke

Robin Gens et al.

Summary: The Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte ratio (NLR) within 24 h after acute ischemic stroke (AIS) does not predict post-stroke UTI, but weakly predicts high risk for post-stroke pneumonia (PSP). When combined with age, gender, NIHSS score, and dysphagia, NLR significantly improves in predicting PSP.

Dysbiosis of Gut Microbiota Is an Independent Risk Factor of Stroke-Associated Pneumonia: A Chinese Pilot Study

Geng-Hong Xia et al.

Summary: The study revealed that patients with SAP had a distinct gut microbiome composition compared to non-SAP patients, with a depletion of Roseburia and enrichment of opportunistic pathogens. Roseburia was identified as a protective factor against SAP. Microbial dysbiosis increased the risk of SAP.
