Genomic Analysis Enlightens Agaricales Lifestyle Evolution and Increasing Peroxidase Diversity

Francisco J. Ruiz-Duenas et al.

Summary: Agaricomycetes, specifically the Agaricales, possess a diverse enzymatic toolkit for lignocellulose decay, with peroxidases playing a central role in this process. The evolution of ancestral Agaricales' enzymatic toolkit is correlated with their ability to grow in various habitats and lifestyles. This study provides insights into the peroxidase evolution in Agaricomycetes and highlights the importance of these enzymes in lignin degradation.

Identification of a Novel Biosynthetic Gene Cluster in Aspergillus niger Using Comparative Genomics

Gregory Evdokias et al.

Summary: The study found that a biosynthetic gene cluster in Aspergillus niger is downregulated in co-culture with Bacillus subtilis. Gene analysis revealed that the cluster contains various genes including nonribosomal peptides synthetase and transcription factor. Overexpression of the transcription factor gene led to reduced growth rate and production of two previously unknown compounds, which were reverted to wild-type phenotype upon deletion of the nonribosomal peptides synthetase gene. This suggests that the biosynthetic gene cluster is regulated by the transcriptional regulator gene and is involved in the production of these compounds.

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation in the reproductive structures of a basidiomycete fungus

Summary: Research has discovered that the sequestrate fungus Guyanagaster necrorhizus can form mutually beneficial symbiotic relationships with termites to disperse spores. This fungus can digest oligosaccharide-rich food, produce ATP, and be rich in nitrogen. The nitrogen-enriched fungal sporocarps may induce termite parasitism through maintaining anaerobic conditions and specific protein molecules.

A novel NRPS cluster, acquired by horizontal gene transfer from algae, regulates siderophore iron metabolism in Burkholderia seminalis R456

Xiaoxuan Wang et al.

Summary: In an environment with limited iron levels, bacteria secrete diverse siderophores to capture Fe3+ for survival. A novel Nonribosomal Peptide Synthetase (NRPS) cluster in Burkholderia seminalis was found to be involved in the production of a new siderophore and regulation of ornubactin and pyochelin, as well as cell motility and biofilm formation, which are dependent on iron concentration. This newly discovered NRPS cluster is suggested to have been obtained by horizontal gene transfer from algae.
