Nucleation, Coalescence, and Thin-Film Growth of Triflate-Based Ionic Liquids on ITO, Ag, and Au Surfaces

Mariana S. M. Teixeira et al.

Summary: This study investigates the nucleation and growth of triflate-based ionic liquid droplets on different surfaces, as well as the wetting behavior of the surfaces. The results show that long-chain alkylimidazolium cations have higher wettability to solid substrates, and larger alkyl side chains are associated with better film homogeneity and cohesion.

The impact of the cation alkyl chain length on the wettability of alkylimidazolium-based ionic liquids at the nanoscale

Jose C. S. Costa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the wettability of four alkylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ILs on different surfaces. Results showed that all ILs exhibited island growth on ITO and Ag surfaces, with lower minimum free area for nucleation on Ag and higher wettability for ILs with larger non-polar domains. The study also revealed the higher affinity of ILs to Au surface and the improvement in film adhesion with the increase of cation alkyl chain length.

Ultrafast spectroscopy reveals singlet fission, ionization and excimer formation in perylene film

Wenjun Ni et al.

Summary: Singlet exciton fission (SF) is a spin-allowed process that can enhance the efficiency of photovoltaic devices by creating two triplet excitons from one singlet exciton. The study of excited state dynamics in perylene film shows potential for high triplet formation quantum yield, singlet fission, and the competition of other relaxation channels. Exciton self-trapping by crystal lattice distortions within picoseconds highlights the simplicity and potential of perylene films in SF-based photovoltaic applications.

On the Aromatic Stabilization of Fused Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Jose C. S. Costa et al.

Summary: Thermodynamic properties and band gap energies were evaluated for six ortho- and peri-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The results indicate non-superaromaticity character of coronene. Accurate thermodynamic properties of sublimation and p-electronic conjugation of these compounds were explored. Morphological characteristics of thin films were found to be related to the cohesive energy and entropy of the bulk.

Time- and Temperature-Dependent Growth Behavior of Ionic Liquids on Au(111) Studied by Atomic Force Microscopy in Ultrahigh Vacuum

Manuel Meusel et al.

Summary: The study investigates the morphology and wetting behavior of [C(1)C(1)Im][Tf2N] deposited on Au(111) at different temperatures, revealing different growth behaviors between deposition at room temperature and deposition below 170 K followed by slow annealing to room temperature. The formation of 2-30 nm high metastable 3D droplets on a checkerboard-type wetting layer is observed upon deposition at room temperature, which eventually spread out into stable 2D bilayers. Tip effects and X-ray radiation are found to accelerate the transformation process from 3D droplets to 2D bilayer islands.
