Methodology for the development of National Multidisciplinary Management Recommendations using a multi-stage meta-consensus initiative

John C. Hardman et al.

Summary: This study developed guidelines for the management of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary (HNSCCUP) using a novel methodology to ensure national adoption. The research included three phases of development, involving data collection and assimilation, consensus generation through a National Consensus Day and Delphi exercise, and resulted in the adoption of 28 statements into the national guidelines. This multi-phase strategy can serve as a cost-effective model for future guideline development for controversial or rare conditions.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Melanoma of unknown primary: New perspectives for an old story

Stergios Boussios et al.

Summary: Melanoma of unknown primary site (MUP) accounts for 3-4% of all melanomas and presents mostly in lymph nodes, subcutaneous sites, and visceral organs. MUP and stage-matched melanoma of known primary site (MKP) share similar prognostic factors, but treatment outcomes vary.

A Challenging Task: Identifying Patients with Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) According to ESMO Guidelines: The CUPISCO Trial Experience

Chantal Pauli et al.

Summary: The ongoing CUPISCO trial aims to compare molecularly guided therapy with platinum-based chemotherapy in patients newly diagnosed with unfavorable cancer of unknown primary (CUP). By sharing experiences, the study aims to improve understanding of diagnostic challenges and clinical CUP algorithms. The challenges of definitively distinguishing CUP from other cancer types in an international clinical trial setting is highlighted, leading to implications for future studies aiming to find better treatment strategies for CUP.
