Lake reclamation alters molecular-level characteristics of lacustrine dissolved organic matter-A study of nine lakes in the Yangtze Plain, China

Quan-Hui Ye et al.

Summary: Reclamation activities have significantly altered the characteristics and composition of lacustrine dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Yangtze Plain lakes, increasing the quantity and biolability of DOM while decreasing the average molecular weight. The presence of lipid-like and condensed aromatic-like components in the DOM suggests increased microbial processing as a result of reclamation.

Variation of carbonaceous disinfectants by-products precursors and their correlation with molecular characteristics of dissolved organic matter and microbial communities in a raw water distribution system

Yueting Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) precursors, low molecular weight-dissolved organic matter (LMW-DOM) characteristics, and microbial pipeline biofilms in the raw water distribution systems (RWDSs) in Taihu Basin. The study found that LMW-DOM in RWDS showed continuous accumulation and tended to possess higher m/z and more CH2 or long alkyl chains, while pre-chlorination controlled this trend. Additionally, microbial diversity decreased in RWDS, with significantly lower abundance and diversity in the pre-chlorinated section.

Unveiling the transformation of dissolved organic matter during ozonation of municipal secondary effluent based on FT-ICR-MS and spectral analysis

Bingliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation of dissolved effluent organic matter (dEfOM) during ozonation of real effluents using advanced spectroscopic techniques. Results showed that as ozone dosage increased, the relative abundance of O8-19 species gradually increased in the ozonated samples, while an opposite trend was observed for O5-7S1 species. The study also identified key reactions and compounds involved in the ozonation process, shedding light on the potential for improving water reclamation through ozonation.

Dynamics of dissolved organic matter and dissolved organic nitrogen during anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment processes

Gang Tang et al.

Summary: Using FT-ICR MS and fluorescence spectroscopy, this study examined the transformation of DOM and DON during A2O processes, showing that anaerobic degradation reduced the mass of influent DOM/DON, anoxic denitrified DON and generated DOM, and oxic processes led to DOM mineralization and ammonia nitrogen-DON conversion. Increases in aromaticity and unsaturation degree after A2O processes were associated with Proteobacteria (positively) and Bacteroidetes (negatively), providing important insights into DOM/DON dynamics in wastewater treatment plants.

Soil Organic Matter Characterization by Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FTICR MS): A Critical Review of Sample Preparation, Analysis, and Data Interpretation

William Bahureksa et al.

Summary: The biogeochemical cycling of soil organic matter is crucial for soil health, water quality, carbon storage, and greenhouse gas emissions. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS) is a powerful analytical technique that helps to understand the speciation and transformation of SOM. This review discusses recent strategies for SOM characterization by FTICR MS, focusing on sample collection, preparation, analysis, and data interpretation. The study also highlights research gaps, biases, and future directions for improving our understanding of organic matter cycling in terrestrial ecosystems.

Summary: The study reveals that compared to DBC, DOM contains a higher percentage of tannin-like/condensed aromatic compounds and higher average conditional stability constants (logK(Cu)). The molecular components of 200-320 Da and 320-480 Da in DBC/DOM significantly contribute to the logK(Cu) values of UVA and visible fluorescent components, respectively, with nitrogenous groups likely exhibiting stronger binding affinities than phenolic/carboxylic groups.
