Functionalized carbon-based nanomaterials and quantum dots with antibacterial activity: a review

Mehran Alavi et al.

Summary: The emergence of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, especially in treating infectious immunodeficiency related diseases, is a complex issue. Nanomaterials (NMs) have played a novel role in treating bacterial infections compared to bulk materials. Carbon-containing quantum dots (QDs) like graphene oxide QD (GOQD), graphene QD (GQD), and carbon QD (CQD) have shown bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The stability and biocompatibility of QDs at higher doses in physiological conditions are major concerns, which can be addressed through functionalization. Additionally, the aspect ratio (AR) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) like single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is a determining factor for antibacterial value, with SWCNTs showing higher antibacterial ability than MWCNTs.

Pyrroloquinoline quinone-dependent glucose dehydrogenase bioelectrodes based on one-step electrochemical entrapment over single-wall carbon nanotubes

Andres Felipe Quintero-Jaime et al.

Summary: The development of effective direct electron transfer for high performance bioelectrodes is an interesting platform. Designing scalable and cost-effective immobilization routes to promote correct direct electrical contacting between the electrode material and the redox enzyme is still necessary. Electrochemical entrapment of PQQ-GDH on SWCNT-modified electrodes enhances electrocatalytic activity towards glucose oxidation. Both entrapment of reconstituted holoenzyme and entrapment of apoenzyme followed by reconstitution show preservation of electrocatalytic activity towards glucose oxidation, with significantly enhanced sensitivity for glucose oxidation using lower amounts of enzyme and cofactor. Single-step electrochemical entrapment in presence of 4-APPA provides a simple method for enzymatic bioelectrode fabrication.
