Mechanisms of Exclusive Scale Formation in the High Temperature Oxidation of Alloys

William H. Blades et al.

Summary: The high-temperature oxidation of alloys requires studying atomic-scale kinetic processes. There is an analogy between exclusive scale formation and thin film layer-by-layer growth. Exclusive scale formation can only occur if there is a sufficiently large density of oxide nucleation events at the surface of the alloy.

Unraveling the role of tungsten as a minor alloying element in the oxidation NiCr alloys

Cameron Volders et al.

Summary: Ni-based superalloys with unique mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and high temperature performance were studied. It was found that the addition of tungsten (W) can enhance the formation of chromia and improve the quality of oxide. Density functional theory calculations confirmed the promoting effect of tungsten on oxygen adsorption.

Initial atomic-scale oxidation pathways on a Ni-15Cr(100) alloy surface

William H. Blades et al.

Summary: The study investigates the nanoscale evolution of oxide growth on a Ni-15 wt%Cr alloy surface before the complete formation of an oxide layer, revealing the formation processes of NiO superlattices and Cr oxides, with Cr phase separation playing a crucial role in the passive Cr-oxide film formation. STS results provide insights into the origins of electronic heterogeneity between oxides and alloys and their effects on oxide growth.
