Optimize Ni, Cu, Mo element of low Cr-steel rebars in tropical marine atmosphere environment through two years of corrosion monitoring

Baojun Dong et al.

Summary: By conducting outdoor exposure tests, it was found that adding Ni, Cu, and Mo elements in low Cr steel rebar can enhance its corrosion resistance in tropical marine environment. The protective layer of the rebar is mainly composed of Mo and Cr, with Cr inhibiting the growth of FeOOH in the rust layer, resulting in a more compact rust layer.

Effect of chloride ion on corrosion resistance of Ni-advanced weathering steel in simulated tropical marine atmosphere

Yueming Fan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of chloride ion on the corrosion resistance of Ni-advanced weathering steel in simulated tropical marine atmosphere. The results showed that the concentration of chloride ion had a primary impact on the corrosion resistance of the steel, affecting the formation of NiFe2O4 and the composition of the product film. Increasing chloride ion concentration led to reduced corrosion resistance and changes in the composition and distribution of nickel in the film.

Comparison of the rusting behaviors of S450EW weathering steel under continuous spray and wet/dry cycling

Tianliang Zhao et al.

Summary: Wet/dry cycling promotes the formation and transformation of FeOOH species in the rust layer, resulting in a lower content of Fe3O4/γ-Fe2O3 compared to continuous spray conditions. The rust layer formed under wet/dry cycling shows less compositional segregation and structural stratification. Wet/dry cycles facilitate the diffusion of oxygen and ions, leading to more uniform rust formation and evolution across the rust layer thickness.

Baojun Dong et al.

Summary: The newly designed LA-1 steel rebar showed good corrosion resistance in the experiment in Sriracha, with its corrosion rate much lower than that of the HRB400E carbon steel rebar. The addition of Cr and Mo elements resulted in the formation of a dense protective film, slowing down the corrosion rate of the steel rebars.

The function of Cr on the rust formed on weathering steel performed in a simulated tropical marine atmosphere environment

Tianyi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study showed that the corrosion rates of weathering steels (WSs) decreased as the Cr contents in WSs increased, and the enriched area of Cr in the inner rust layer effectively blocked the invasion of Cl-. High content of Cr in steel promoted the generation of Cr(OH)(3) and Cr2O3, acting as nucleation sites for the formation of Fe3O4 and alpha-FeOOH.

Qiang Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of different Cl- deposition conditions on the corrosion mechanism and electrochemical properties of rust layer for weathering steel. The research shows that low Cl- deposition leads to a three-stage corrosion rate while high Cl- deposition results in a two-stage corrosion rate. The increase of Cl- deposition affects the composition of rust layer and decreases corrosion resistance.

Optimizing the resistance of Ni-advanced weathering steel to marine atmospheric corrosion with the addition of Al or Mo

Xuexu Xu et al.

Summary: The self-designed Ni-advanced weathering steels alloyed with Al and Mo were found to have improved corrosion resistance, especially when Mo is added compared to Al. The addition of Mo can lead to the formation of a thicker protective rust layer, which effectively resists Cl intrusion due to the presence of MoO2 and MoO3 that prevent the degradation of NiFe2O4. On the other hand, the Al-enriched particles are unable to block Cl intrusion but can help in filling the pores and cracks in the rust layer, making it more compact and increasing its resistance.

On how the corrosion behavior and the functions of Cu, Ni and Mo of the weathering steel in environments with different NaCl concentrations

Tianyi Zhang et al.

Summary: The corrosion resistance of weathering steel decreases as NaCl concentration increases, although the weight gain rate is lower in high concentration due to the inhibition on the diffusion of O2 caused by residual NaCl solution. In low NaCl concentrations, Cu, Ni, and Mo can promote the agglomeration process and improve the rust layer performance, while in high NaCl concentrations, this process is severely inhibited, resulting in a loose rust layer.
