Photoswitching activation of a ferrocenyl-stilbene analogue by its covalent grafting to gold

Francesc Bejarano et al.

Summary: This study investigates the photoisomerization of an asymmetrically substituted styrene containing a redox-active ferrocene moiety and a terminal alkyne group in solution, and upon forming chemisorbed self-assembled monolayers. The charge transport measurements across the monolayers show that there is an alteration of the isomerization pathway when linked to the gold substrate, favoring trans to cis conversion compared to solution. The experimental results are interpreted based on quantum chemistry calculations.

Mutual Monomer Orientation To Bias the Supramolecular Polymerization of [6]Helicenes and the Resulting Circularly Polarized Light and Spin Filtering Properties

Rafael Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This study reports on the synthesis and self-assembly of 2,15- and 4,13-disubstituted carbo[6]helicenes bearing 3,4,5-tridodecylox-ybenzamide groups. The self-assembly of these helicenes is influenced by the substitution pattern in the helicene core, resulting in different supramolecular structures. The helical supramolecular structures exhibit efficient electron-spin filtering abilities when deposited on conductive surfaces.

Summary: This work investigates the self-assembly of two ferrocene derivatives with two anchoring groups as self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). By using different deposition protocols and characterization techniques, the SAM structure, orientation, and position of the ferrocene molecule within the SAM are determined. The study also explores the electron transfer kinetics and the effect of a carbon spacer on SAM packing. The findings contribute to the understanding of anchoring groups on gold surfaces and may have applications in functional molecular devices.

Nanoscale Silicon Oxide Reduces Electron Transfer Kinetics of Surface-Bound Ferrocene Monolayers on Silicon

Tiexin Li et al.

Summary: Functionalizing Si with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) allows for integrating semiconducting properties with organic molecules. The growth of silicon oxide on the surfaces over time results in a decrease in the electron transfer rate constant, affecting the electrochemical charge-transfer kinetics of the SAMs on Si. This has implications for designing Si-based molecular electronic devices.

Role of Order in the Mechanism of Charge Transport across Single-Stranded and Double-Stranded DNA Monolayers in Tunnel Junctions

Nipun Kumar Gupta et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigates charge transport across dense DNA monolayers in biomolecular tunnel junctions, revealing that double-stranded DNA is 30-fold more conductive than single-stranded DNA due to intrachain tunneling. By varying temperature and DNA fragment length, a complex interplay between temperature, DNA length, and structural order on the mechanism of charge transport is revealed. Increasing tunneling distance and decreasing structural order result in a change in the mechanism of charge transport from coherent tunneling to incoherent tunneling.

The spin selectivity effect in chiral materials

D. H. Waldeck et al.

Summary: The experiments on the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect have shown common attributes in different material systems, including the ability to observe spin selectivity for two point contact configurations and the correlation between the optical activity of chiral systems and a material's spin filtering properties. Recent experiments indicate that spin selectivity does not require pure coherent charge transport and electron spin polarization can persist over hundreds of nanometers in an ordered medium. However, there are still issues to be explored regarding the CISS mechanism, such as the role of phonons and electron-electron interactions.
