Thermoelastic properties of zircon: Implications for geothermobarometry

Alix M. Ehlers et al.

Summary: A thermal-pressure equation of state has been determined for zircon, which shows that zircon is stiffer than garnet and has lower thermal expansion. This makes zircon trapped as inclusions in garnet at metamorphic conditions a good piezothermometer.

Experimental variable effects on laser heating of inclusions during Raman spectroscopic analysis

Yuuki Hagiwara et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is a powerful tool to study fluid, melt, and mineral inclusions, providing direct insight into the physicochemical conditions. However, the local temperature enhancement due to laser heating can modify the Raman spectral characteristics, leading to potential systematic errors. This study successfully determined the laser heating coefficient (B) from experiments and simulations, and analyzed the parameters influencing its value.

Thermodynamics of Mg-Al Order-Disorder Reaction in MgAl2O4-Spinel: Constrained by Prolonged Annealing Experiments at 773-1123 K

Yunlu Ma et al.

Summary: MgAl2O4-spinel is widely used in industrial and geological applications due to its special features, with the well-known phenomenon of Mg-Al cations exchanging positions in response to variations in temperature, pressure, and composition. The CS94 Model has been shown to better describe the cation order-disorder reaction in MgAl2O4-spinel, providing valuable insights for understanding this process.

EoS of mantle minerals coupled with composition and thermal state of the lithosphere: Inferring the density structure of peridotitic systems

Luca Faccincani et al.

Summary: Understanding the physical state and properties of mantle rocks is crucial for studying plate tectonics, seismic activity, and volcanism. This paper presents a new method for evaluating the thermoelastic parameters of certain mineral phases in the Earth's mantle, providing insights into the density structure of mantle peridotites under different pressure and temperature conditions.

Analytical solution for residual stress and strain preserved in anisotropic inclusion entrapped in an isotropic host

Xin Zhong et al.

Summary: Raman elastic thermobarometry has been widely used to determine the P-T conditions of mineral inclusion entrapment in petrological studies. This study introduces an analytical framework based on the Eshelby solution to calculate the residual stress and strain state of ellipsoidal inclusions in an isotropic host, showing that the effect of changing the aspect ratio varies for different mineral inclusions. Results indicate that quartz is the least affected by aspect ratio changes, while rutile is the most affected. Furthermore, the study demonstrates the possibility of fitting an effective ellipsoid to estimate the averaged residual stress or strain within faceted inclusions, expanding the applicability of the analytical solution in practical Raman measurements.
