Maximum mechano-damage power release-based phase-field modeling of mass diffusion in damaging deformable solids

Emilio Barchiesi et al.

Summary: In this paper, a phase-field theory is proposed to describe mass diffusion in a damaging deformable solid matrix. The theory is based on mass balance, maximum mechano-damage power release principle, and energy imbalance inequality. The properties of the model are studied through finite-element dynamic simulations.

Nontrivial nanostructure, stress relaxation mechanisms, and crystallography for pressure-induced Si-I → Si-II phase transformation

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: The unexpected nanostructure evolution during Si-I -> Si-II phase transformation is revealed by combining molecular dynamics, crystallographic theory, and in situ real-time Laue X-ray diffraction. This phase transformation results in twinned Si-II and unexpected nanobands, which form specific interfaces with Si-I and create self-accommodated nanostructure.

The effect of a pre-existing nanovoid on martensite formation and interface propagation: a phase field study

Mahdi Javanbakht et al.

Summary: The effect of a pre-existing nanovoid on martensitic phase transformation was investigated using the phase field approach. It was found that the nanovoid alters the evolution of the moving interface and induces martensite nucleation and growth near the interface. The nanovoid shows a promotive effect on the phase transformation with an increase in the rate of transformation.

Nonlinear thermodynamic phase field theory with application to fracture and dynamic inelastic phenomena in ceramic polycrystals

J. D. Clayton

Summary: A geometrically nonlinear phase field theory is constructed to account for dissipation, rate effects, nonlinear thermoelasticity, fracture, and other structural changes in the context of continuum thermodynamics. Specialized to deformation physics pertinent to crystalline ceramics and minerals deformed at high rates and pressures, the theory provides insights into high-rate deformation mechanisms in these materials.

Phase-field modeling of multivariant martensitic transformation at finite-strain: Computational aspects and large-scale finite-element simulations

K. Tuma et al.

Summary: This study investigates large-scale 3D martensitic microstructure evolution problems using a finite-element discretization of a finite-strain phase-field model. The model incorporates various crystallography of transformation and elastic anisotropy of the phases, and demonstrates robustness and good parallel scaling performance in a 3D simulation of microstructure evolution during nano-indentation. The finite-element discretization relies on the PETSc solver library and efficiently solves the large systems of linear equations arising from the model.

Grain boundary-induced premelting and solid ⇆ melt phase transformations: effect of interfacial widths and energies and triple junctions at the nanoscale

Anup Basak

Summary: This study investigates the influence of dry grain boundaries, isolated solid-melt interfaces, and triple junction energies on premelting and solid-melt transformations at the nanoscale using a Ginzburg-Landau phase field approach. By modeling the variation of transformation temperatures with width ratio, the research shows bistable regions and hysteresis effects in premelting. The study also explores the role of triple junctions in inducing premelt pockets at lower temperatures than grain boundaries, leading to complete melting of the sample.
