Chloride-related steel corrosion initiation in cement paste prepared with the incorporation of blast-furnace slag

Xiang Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of blast-furnace slag on the passivation and corrosion processes of carbon steel in cement pastes. It finds that the presence of slag weakens the formation of passive layers on the surface of carbon steel, making it more susceptible to corrosion. However, the addition of slag lowers the threshold chloride concentration for steel corrosion and improves the overall corrosion resistance of carbon steel in slag-blended cement paste.

In situ TEM observation of calcium silicate hydrate nanostructure at high temperatures

Qi Zheng et al.

Summary: In situ TEM study shows that C-S-H shrinks at high temperatures, with a decrease in Ca/Si ratio leading to the formation of CaO precipitates. Moreover, above 800 degrees C, C-S-H undergoes phase transformation into metastable calcium silicate minerals.

Physical-chemical-mechanical quantitative assessment of the microstructural evolution in Portland-limestone cement pastes exposed to magnesium sulfate attack at low temperature

Konstantinos Sotiriadis et al.

Summary: The magnesium sulfate attack on Portland-limestone cement pastes at low temperature resulted in a deterioration front with three distinct layers, characterized by gypsum and thaumasite. The extensive cross-linking of aluminosilicate structures and impairment of mechanical performance were observed in the leached matrix due to decalcification and dealumination of the C-(A-)S-H phases, with C-S-H of low packing density being the most severely affected. The increased rate of deterioration with limestone content was tentatively attributed to the prevalent morphology of the C-S-H phase.

Effects of pH on the nano/micro structure of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) under sulfate attack

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: pH plays a crucial role in the deterioration behavior of C-S-H during sulfate attack, with lower pH aggravating decalcification and higher alkalinity enhancing resistance. Under low-pH sulfate attack, C-S-H exhibits a relatively loose structure with increased mean chain length and proportion of large pores.

Mineralogical and microstructural alterations in a portland cement paste after an accelerated decalcification process

I Garcia-Lodeiro et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the microstructural changes in cement pastes exposed to accelerated decalcification, revealing significant effects on portlandite, C-S-H gel, anhydrous clinker, and ettringite. Decalcification induced major micro- and nano-structural changes, particularly in the layers closest to the leaching agent. The distribution of water molecules and the type of bonding in different layers were also found to be significantly affected by the decalcification process.

Experimental investigation on mechanical strength and microstructure of cement paste by electric curing with different voltage and frequency

Zhihan Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that the alternative current voltage and frequency significantly influence the early compressive strength of cement paste, with a suitable electric curing condition leading to steady growth of compressive strength and excellent microstructure. The Joule heat generated by direct electric curing is identified as the main factor accelerating hydration and improving early strength development in the samples.

Coupling effect of the connected pores and pore solution on chloride ion migration in cement-based materials

Ruipan Wang et al.

Summary: A new method based on AC impedance tests was developed to determine connected pore porosity, tortuosity, and constrictivity in this study. The effects of different factors on the chloride ion migration coefficient were evaluated, with a focus on the importance of reducing connected porosity for controlling chloride ion migration.
