On the early behavior and microstructure of oil well cement paste incorporating with carbon nanotubes cured at a high temperature

Jinyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the rheological behavior, early mechanical properties, and volume stability of oil well cement paste (OWCP). It shows that an optimal dosage of MWCNTs enhances the rheological behavior, mechanical properties, and autogenous shrinkage of OWCP composites. The reinforcing mechanism includes additional nucleation sites, bridging effect, and pull-out effect by MWCNTs. The relationship between compressive strengths and gel/space ratios is altered by MWCNTs, but the relationship between hydration degree and curing ages, as well as mercury intrusion porosity and gel/space ratio, remains unchanged.

Microstructural insight into the deterioration mechanism of the mortar subject to the combined action of external sulfate attack and cyclic wetting-drying

Rongwei Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the deterioration mechanism of mortar exposed to external sulfate attack (ESA) and cyclic wetting-drying (CWD), and reveals that the decrease in portlandite, loss of OH-, evolution of pore size distributions, and decalcification of C-S-H contribute to the severe durability issue of cement-based materials. Ettringite is identified as the principal cause of mortar deterioration under ESA and CWD.

Carbonation behaviors of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H): Effects of aluminum

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: The cement systems with supplementary cementitious materials exhibit lower resistance to carbonation than ordinary Portland cement. This study compared the carbonation behaviors of C-S-H and C-A-S-H and found that the carbonation of C-(A)-S-H goes through dissolution, diffusion, and stationary period, resulting in different forms of calcium carbonate and aluminum modified silica gel.

Effects of pH on the nano/micro structure of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) under sulfate attack

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: pH plays a crucial role in the deterioration behavior of C-S-H during sulfate attack, with lower pH aggravating decalcification and higher alkalinity enhancing resistance. Under low-pH sulfate attack, C-S-H exhibits a relatively loose structure with increased mean chain length and proportion of large pores.

Effect of Curing Age on the Microstructure and Hydration Behavior of Oil Well Cement Paste Cured at High Temperature

Mingliang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the evolution of microstructure and hydration behaviors of OWCP cured at 80 degrees C, showing that porosity decreased while gel porosity increased with curing age. The Ca/Si ratio of C-S-H decreased initially and then stabilized, and the relationships between porosity and gel/space ratio, as well as hydration degree and total amount of portlandite, were found to be independent of curing temperature.

Effect of supplementary cementitious materials on carbonation of cement pastes

Mickael Saillio et al.

Summary: The study found that anhydrous phases are less decalcified than hydrated phases after carbonation, with most of the calcium in slag-containing cement pastes remaining in the non-hydrated part of the slag. The C-A,S-H phase undergoes significant modification during carbonation, showing a coupling with hydrated aluminate phases. Ultimately, in all carbonated materials, these phases tend to form an aluminosilicate gel with less water content than the original hydrates.
