Formulation of an alkali-free accelerator and its effects on hydration and mechanical properties of Portland cement

Yifei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of an alkali-free accelerator (AMD) on the hydration and mechanical properties of Portland cement. It is found that AMD accelerator can effectively shorten the setting time and enhance the early strength of Portland cement. Though it may retard the early hydration of alite and lead to higher porosity, it has no negative impact on the long-term strength development and may even slightly increase it.

Impact of sulphate source on the hydration of ternary pastes of Portland cement, calcium aluminate cement and calcium sulphate

Elsa Qoku et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hydration and evolution of solid phase assemblage in ternary cement pastes as a function of sulphate source. The results show that the type of sulphate influences the amounts of crystalline hydrates and X-ray amorphous phases. In long-term hydration, formulations containing anhydrite exhibit the highest amount of ettringite, while gypsum-containing samples develop a higher fraction of AFm phases and X-ray amorphous hydrates. The type of sulphate source also impacts the hydration of silicate-bearing phases.

Summary: The addition of superabsorbent polymer (SAP) as internal curing agent can significantly reduce the autogenous shrinkage of alkali activated slag (AAS) pastes and promote the formation of C-A-S-H gels and hydrotalcite-like phases. However, the addition of SAP also increases the capillary pore size and pore volume of the pastes, leading to a decrease in compressive strength.

Local structure and Ca/Si ratio in C-S-H gels from hydration of blends of tricalcium silicate and silica fume

Ana Cuesta et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the Ca/Si ratio of C-S-H gel depends on the scale, with discrepancies at the nanoscale. Different researches point to the location of the excess Ca(OH)(2) component at the nanoscale, while also indicating its presence in the tobermorite structure or nanoportlandite. The results suggest that the C-S-H gel formed by the pozzolanic reaction has a local structure similar to the primary C-S-H gel, with the excess Ca(OH)(2) portion likely existing as nanoparticles.
