Framework to characterize nonlinear flow through pervious concrete

Sergio Tunis Martins Filho et al.

Summary: The study examines the hydraulic behavior of pervious concrete using Forchheimer's law and Darcy's law, finding that flow in some cases does not follow Darcy's law. By studying the relationship between flow resistance parameters and porosity, valuable insights into how heterogeneity in pervious concretes affects flow behavior can be obtained, which may be crucial for designing improved pervious concretes.

Summary: This study provides a sustainable solution for the secondary recycling of low-quality brick-concrete demolition residue in construction. Through systematic characterization and multi-scale structure analysis, it is found that incorporating the secondarily recycled residue improves the engineering properties of pervious concrete and reduces CO2 emissions and costs.

Multi-aspect engineering properties and sustainability impacts of geopolymer pervious concrete

Wei Huang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the engineering properties and sustainability impacts of geopolymer pervious concrete. The results showed that metakaolin-based pervious concrete exhibited superior mechanical properties and lowest mass loss after freeze & thaw test. Fly ash-based pervious concrete had better splitting tensile strength and raveling resistance, but lower freeze & thaw resistance. The hydraulic conductivity test showed that porosity was the major factor influencing permeability coefficient. Different raw materials also had an impact on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission, with fly ash-based pervious concrete showing the lowest energy consumption and the greatest reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Mechanical behavior and durability of coral aggregate concrete and bonding performance with fi ber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars: A critical review

Linlin Zhou et al.

Summary: Utilization of coral aggregates in concrete production can solve raw material shortages in remote islands, but issues such as strength loss and durability performance need further research. Proposed solutions include pre-treatment protocols and utilization of non-corrosive FRP bars to improve the performance of coral aggregate concrete. Further investigation on durability performance and FRP bars reinforced CAC is needed to promote its application in ocean engineering.

Improving the sulfate attack resistance of concrete by using supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs): A review

Md Manjur A. Elahi et al.

Summary: In general, fly ash, slag, silica fume, and metakaolin can effectively mitigate sulfate attack, but the performance depends on replacement rate, sulfate cation exposure, and their chemical and physical properties. Performance was found to be improved with increased dosage rates for all SCMs except silica fume and Class C fly ash, and mixed for metakaolin and silica fume in magnesium sulfate at higher replacement rates.

Summary: The study found that the aggregate gradation significantly influences the performance of permeable brick, with the use of four-grade aggregate leading to a permeable brick with both high permeability and higher strength. The ratio of flexural to compressive strength of permeable ceramic brick is about 0.65, which is obviously higher than that of ordinary pervious concrete.

Study of the anti-abrasion performance and mechanism of coral reef sand concrete

Qinglong Qin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the anti-abrasion performance and micro-hardness of coral reef sand concrete, and found a linear relationship between the anti-abrasion strength and compressive strength of concrete mixed with fly ash and silica fume. The characteristics of the coral aggregate, including roughness, porosity, shape irregularity, and mineral composition, were found to affect the anti-abrasion performance of the concrete.
