Degradation resistance of different cementitious materials to phosphoric acid attack at early stage

Jie Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigates the early-stage degradation process of different cementitious materials in phosphoric acid. The results show that alkali-activated slag/fly ash binders have the lowest degradation rate and the chemical properties of binders are critical influential factors in the early-stage behavior.

Water resistance and luminescent thermal stability of SiO2 coated phosphor and self-luminous cement-based materials: View from the perspective of hydration balance

Wentong Wang et al.

Summary: The SiO2 coating on luminescent powder is found to slightly decrease luminous intensity but improve water resistance. Additionally, in an alkaline environment, the coating disrupts the hydrolysis balance between phosphor and cement, leading to reduced luminous brightness in the specimen.

A new ternary composite steel rebar coating for enhanced corrosion resistance in chloride environment

Manu Harilal et al.

Summary: This work presents a novel ternary cement polymer composite coating (CPFNIC) with enhanced corrosion protection for steel rebars in a chloride environment. The new coating significantly delays the onset of corrosion due to the synergistic contributions from fly ash, nanoparticles, and inhibitor. Electrochemical studies show improved corrosion performance of CPFNIC compared to uncoated rebars, with higher corrosion potential, lower corrosion current density, higher polarization resistance, and lower corrosion rate. Visual inspection and weight loss measurements confirm the improved resistance of CPFNIC coated rebars in chloride environment.

Design and experiment of self-luminescent asphalt-based pavement materials

Runhua Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, a self-luminescent asphalt mixture (SLAM) was developed and tested for its properties. The results showed that the luminescence and solar reflectance of SLAM improved with an increase in the artificial luminescent stone (ALS) content, but there were still issues with other performance aspects.

Self-luminescent cement-based composite materials: properties and mechanisms

Wentong Wang et al.

Summary: Self-luminescent cement-based composite materials (SLCCM) have been developed for environmental protection pavement and smart pavement applications by doping luminescent powder and reflective powder into cement-based materials. Mechanical and luminous properties, as well as the luminescence mechanism, were evaluated to determine the optimal mix for road pavement utilization.

Enhanced corrosion protection of reinforcement steel with nanomaterial incorporated fly ash based cementitious coating

Divya Rachel Rooby et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of a novel nanophase modified fly ash based cement polymer coating on steel reinforcements in a corrosive environment. The addition of nano-ZrO2 significantly enhanced the corrosion resistance of the cementitious coatings, with CFZ coating showing the highest durability and effectively reducing corrosion of rebars.

Cement filled with phosphorescent materials for pavement: Afterglow decay mechanism and properties

Wentong Wang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the impact of luminescent powder (LP) content on the mechanical properties, brightness, and afterglow of self-luminescent cement-based composite materials (SLCCM), as well as the related reaction mechanisms. The results showed that the LP content had a certain effect on the mechanical strength of SLCCM specimens, with low LP content limiting the luminous area and high LP content leading to changes in chemical reactions. The optimal LP content range was found to be 20-25wt%.

Carbon uptake of concrete in the US pavement network

Hessam AzariJafari et al.

Summary: This study advances knowledge on pavement carbon uptake by estimating the carbon sequestration and costs associated with the US pavement network using state-level data. Results show California having the largest carbon uptake during the use phase, with states having extensive composite pavement networks showing larger uptake during end-of-life phase. Increasing the stockpiling period can enhance end-of-life carbon uptake, making it a competitive strategy for greenhouse gas mitigation in the road network.
