Monitoring and evaluation of the repair quality of concrete cracks using piezoelectric smart aggregates

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method to monitor and evaluate the repair quality of concrete cracks using piezoelectric smart aggregates (SAs). The principle of stress wave propagation in the repairing process of concrete cracks is explored, and an energy analysis method based on wavelet packet is developed to quantitatively characterize the signal energy. The proposed repair index can monitor the crack repair process in real time and has the potential to evaluate the repair performance of different crack repair materials.

The installation of embedded ultrasonic transducers inside a bridge to monitor temperature and load influence using coda wave interferometry technique

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: This article presents a unique method of installing a special type of embedded ultrasonic transducers inside a 36-m-long section of an old bridge in Germany. The study included a small-scale load test to investigate the influence of temperature and load on the bridge, as well as the performance of the embedded transducers. The feasibility of using wave velocity variation rate Phi for structural health condition estimation was discussed, and the successful detection of load- and temperature-induced weak wave velocity variations was highlighted.

Monitoring the damage evolution of reinforced concrete during tunnel boring machine hoisting by acoustic emission

Fen Liu et al.

Summary: Acoustic emission (AE) technology, due to its high sensitivity and real-time monitoring feature, has been successfully applied to the health monitoring of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. In this paper, a customized wide-band-low-frequency sensor was developed for monitoring the health of concrete structures during the hoisting of a tunnel boring machine (TBM). The monitoring and analysis using AE technology showed that energy and counts were sensitive parameters for monitoring the damage evolution of RC structures. Damage evolution and crack mode analysis were also carried out to evaluate the damage degree and remaining life of the structure.

Summary: This study uses an active monitoring method to observe the humidity of concrete in real time by embedding piezoelectric smart aggregates in the concrete. A humidity index is defined to describe the variation in humidity of the concrete. The experimental results demonstrate that the humidity index is effective in monitoring and evaluating the humidity inside concrete structures.

Monitoring depth and width of cracks in underwater concrete structures using embedded smart aggregates

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: This work proposes a new method to monitor the width and depth of cracks in underwater concrete structures using embedded smart aggregates (SAs). An experimental platform is designed with two SAs embedded in the concrete beam to excite and acquire signals. The time-domain method and wavelet packet decomposition are utilized to analyze and calculate the sensor signal energy. The results show that the sensor signal energy decays with an increase in crack depth, but first decays and then increases with crack width. A damage index based on crack depth is defined to describe the crack depth damage in the underwater concrete beams.

Fast Blur Detection Algorithm for UAV Crack Image Sets

Linlin Wang et al.

Summary: Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely used in visual inspection of structural cracks, but the blurry images generated during image collecting significantly affect the accuracy and reliability of crack damage assessment. This paper proposes a novel automatic blur detection method based on edge average width difference (EAWD) metric, combined with crack image characteristics, to effectively judge the blur quality of crack images. Experimental results demonstrate that this method is fast, accurate, and reliable, providing a promising solution for UAV crack image data sets.
