Cement based-thermal energy storage mortar including blast furnace slag/capric acid shape-stabilized phase change material: Physical, mechanical, thermal properties and solar thermoregulation performance

Osman Gencel et al.

Summary: The efficiency of solar thermal energy in cementitious mortar is enhanced by using a phase change material (PCM) with thermal energy harvesting/releasing ability. A new type of cement-based thermal energy storage mortar (CBTESM) was developed by substituting blast furnace slag (BFS)/capric acid (CA) shape-stabilized PCM (SSPCM) with varying amounts of sand. The results showed that the addition of BFS did not affect the crystalline structure of CA, and successful impregnation of melted CA into BFS was confirmed. The CBTESM samples with SSPCM additives exhibited decreased bulk density, compressive strength, and thermal conductivity. The addition of 15% SSPCM was found to meet the standard conditions in terms of compressive strength. The developed CBTESM significantly reduced indoor temperature and showed potential for energy savings and carbon emission reduction.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive experimental investigation on the use of cement pastes enhanced with Microencapsulated Phase Change Materials (MPCM) for Thermal Energy Storage (TES) applications. The study found that MPCM substitution significantly affects the overall porosity and thermal conductivity of the composite, resulting in lower thermal conductivity compared to plain cement matrix.

Summary: This investigation focuses on manufacturing a novel thermal energy storage (TES) material by combining microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) with foam concrete (FC). The results show that the new material has improved thermal mass and advantageous physico-mechanical properties. It also has the ability to regulate room temperature, lowering it during the day and increasing it after sunset.

Development and properties of light-transmitting concrete (LTC) - A review

Shing Mei Chiew et al.

Summary: The use of light-transmitting concrete (LTC) helps reduce building energy consumption by allowing light to pass through opaque concrete. However, challenges such as labor costs, manufacturing complexity, and lack of reliable data on mechanical properties hinder its widespread application. Further research is needed to evaluate LTC's light-transmitting properties and durability in various environmental conditions.

Incorporation of Phase Change Materials into Fibers for Sustainable Thermal Energy Storage

Yun-Ho Ahn et al.

Summary: Efficient thermal modulation and storage are crucial for energy efficiency improvement. Phase change materials (PCMs) have been integrated into various platforms, with polymer fibers showing advantages in being solution-processed and produced at large scales. The research focused on fabricating polymer fibers with high loadings (up to 80 wt %) of microencapsulated PCMs (mu PCMs) to achieve sufficient heat storage capacity, demonstrating that around 95% of thermal storage capacities are retained in the fiber after the fabrication process.

Osman Gencel et al.

Summary: Novel cement based mortars containing bottom ash and phase change material can effectively control the thermal energy of buildings, but may reduce the compressive strength and dry unit weight of the materials. At the same time, such composite materials show good performance in indoor temperature regulation, offering potential for energy saving and carbon emission reduction in buildings.
