Cancer statistics, 2022

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

MiR-126-5p Promotes Tumor Cell Proliferation, Metastasis and Invasion by Targeting TDO2 in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Yang Ai et al.

Summary: The study found that miR-126-5p is involved in the progression of HCC by promoting the expression of TDO2, PI3K/AKT, and WNT1. It was also found to increase intracellular tryptophan metabolism. Furthermore, miR-126-5p was shown to have effects on cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. It may serve as a biomarker and potential treatment target in the progression of HCC.

Overexpression of miR-200b-3p in Menstrual Blood-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Endometriosis Women

Rafael Zucco de Oliveira et al.

Summary: The relationship between Sampson's theory and the presence of mesenchymal stem cells (MenSCs) in the menstrual flow and the changes in post-transcriptional regulatory processes in endometriosis are not well understood. This study aimed to investigate the imbalance of miRNAs in MenSCs related to the disease. Through analysis of databases and a case-control study, the researchers found that miR-200b-3p was upregulated in endometriosis MenSCs and may play a role in cell proliferation and the mesenchymal-epithelial transition process.

Summary: This study identified 15 differentially expressed circRNAs between NSCLC tissues and adjacent-normal tissues in two GEO datasets. Through validation by qRT-PCR, 7 circRNAs were found significantly downregulated in A549 and SK-MES-1. By utilizing various databases and analysis methods, miRNAs and mRNAs associated with the pathogenesis and prognosis of NSCLC were identified.

miR-96-5p, miR-134-5p, miR-181b-5p and miR-200b-3p heterogenous expression in sites of prostate cancer versus benign prostate hyperplasia-archival samples study

Kacper Pelka et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the expression levels of miR-96-5p, -134-5p, -181b-5p, -200b-3p in FFPE samples of prostate cancer, adjacent cancer-free tissue, and benign prostatic hyperplasia. It was found that miR-200b-3p expression was significantly higher in cancerous prostate tissues, while miR-181b-5p expression was lower in both prostate cancer tissues and adjacent tissues compared to BPH samples. miR-96-5p and miR-134-5p were also found to be lower in prostate cancer tissues. Levels of miR-96-5p, miR-134-5p, and 181b-5p were negatively correlated with the Gleason score. Further studies suggest that miR-96-5p, miR-134-5p, miR-200b-3p, and miR-181b-5p may have potential in differentiating between BPH and prostate cancer.

RHAMM Is a Multifunctional Protein That Regulates Cancer Progression

Britney J. Messam et al.

Summary: The functional complexity of higher organisms is generated by transcriptional, translational, and post-translational mechanisms, as well as tissue organization. Multifunctionality of expressed proteins helps cells respond to stimuli. RHAMM is a multifunctional protein that controls differential responses of cells in injury contexts and evolved into a sensor-transducer in higher organisms.

Isabel Garcia-Saez et al.

Summary: Eg5, a motor protein involved in mitotic spindle formation, has attracted interest as a potential target for cancer chemotherapy. While most inhibitors have shown limited efficacy, one inhibitor, Arry-520, has demonstrated clinical effectiveness in multiple myeloma patients and sparked new research trends including alternative binding sites and drug synergy. The field faces challenges in drug resistance development and improving therapeutic applications for Eg5 inhibitors.
