Stress-dilatancy behavior of dense marine calcareous sand under high-cycle loading: An experimental investigation

Shao-Heng He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the stress-dilatancy behavior of calcareous sand under high-cycle loading and found significant differences compared to monotonic loading. The number of loading cycles has a considerable effect on the stress-dilatancy behavior of calcareous sands, leading to a transformation in stress-dilatancy as the cycles increase. A correlation between the number of loading cycles and the flow rule considering the state parameter (psi) was proposed to describe the direction of strain accumulation for calcareous sand under long-term cyclic loading.

A review of methods, applications and limitations for incorporating fluid flow in the discrete element method

Tuo Wang et al.

Summary: The past decade has seen significant progress in the research on coupled hydro-mechanical processes in rocks and soils, driven by the study of unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs and associated risks. Various fluid flow/DEM coupling methods have been developed and applied to geomechanical problems, but there is no universal method due to the complexity of engineering problems and limitations of numerical methods. This paper provides a comprehensive review of fluid flow/DEM coupling methods, discusses their principles, applications, advantages, and disadvantages, and outlines the availability of best practice guidelines.

Applicability of discrete element method with spherical and clumped particles for constitutive study of granular materials

Tongming Qu et al.

Summary: This study compares DEM simulations with experimental granular materials in terms of deviatoric stress, volumetric behavior, critical state behavior, stress-dilatancy relationship, and the evolution of principal stress ratio against axial strain. The results show that DEM with spherical or clumped particles can qualitatively describe some macroscopic features of granular materials, but there are qualitative deviations in terms of stress-dilatancy behavior and principal stress ratio, which are critical for constitutive modeling.

Predicting the permeability coefficient of polydispersed sand via coupled CFD-DEM simulations

Shanlin Xu et al.

Summary: Permeability, a fundamental property of soil, plays a crucial role in geotechnical engineering problems. However, existing permeability prediction equations fail to accurately consider the influence of particle size distributions (PSDs) on the permeability coefficient. This research conducted coupled computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM) simulations to quantify the influence of PSD on permeability and proposed a prediction equation for permeability.

Summary: We have developed a comprehensive framework that can be applied to porous media with multiple porosity scales and saturated with one or two types of fluids. The proposed model is applicable to both elastic and elastoplastic deformations, and can be used for both uncoupled and coupled simulations. We have investigated the depletion process of fractured reservoirs and the effects of multiple factors on system response through uncoupled flow simulations and coupled flow and geomechanics simulations.

Effect of particle breakage on the behavior of soil-structure interface under constant normal stiffness condition with DEM

Pei Wang et al.

Summary: This study used the discrete element method to simulate a series of interface shear tests with constant normal stiffness to investigate the impact of particle breakage on the behavior of the soil-structure interface. The results showed that particle breakage decreases dilation, normal stress, shear stress, and shear zone thickness in the interface shear test, decreases the peak friction angle while increases the residual friction angle at the interface, and decreases soil anisotropy at the interface. Additionally, the degree of particle breakage is increased by normal stiffness.

DEM-DFM modeling of suffusion in calcareous sands considering the effect of double-porosity

Tuo Wang et al.

Summary: Calcareous sand is marine biogenic sand formed by coral debris and marine organism skeletal bodies. The double-porosity structure of calcareous sand plays a crucial role in influencing the migration of fine particles during seepage erosion. This study numerically investigates the internal erosion in calcareous sand with a double-porosity structure and reveals the effect of intra-particle flows on erosion mass percentage and flow velocity.

Micromechanical analysis of the particle corner breakage effect on pile penetration resistance and formation of breakage zones in coral sand

Yu Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microscopic mechanism of pile penetration in crushable granular soils, with a focus on the role of particle corner breakage. Experimental tests and DEM simulations were conducted to analyze the behavior of piles in coral sand. The findings reveal that the particular shrinkage of friction resistance in coral sand is attributed to the dual effect of corners. Increasing confining pressure does not effectively improve the friction-bearing capacity of piles. The diagram describing the relationship between corner breakage and effective contacts provides insights into the force transmission in soil. The study also highlights the impact of grain angularity on particle breakage within a shear zone.

Cumulative deformations and particle breakage in calcareous sand subjected to drained high-cyclic loading: Experimental investigation

Shao-Heng He et al.

Summary: The study found that larger void ratios and consolidation anisotropy led to a significant increase in accumulated axial strain, transforming stable shakedown behavior into transitional or unstable shakedown behaviors. The relationship between the particle breakage index (Br) and the total input energy (W-in) was unique under high-cyclic loading, regardless of stress conditions and initial void ratios. An appropriate equation was developed to describe the correlation between Br and W(in) under high-cyclic loading, which was found to differ dramatically from that under monotonic loading.

Strength and permeability of bentonite-assisted biocemented coarse sand

Guoliang Ma et al.

Summary: The addition of bentonite can increase the volume fractions of the precipitates consisting of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and bentonite, leading to a decrease in permeability and an improvement in unconfined compressive strength (UCS) when lower concentrations are used. However, adverse effects were observed with high concentrations of bentonite. Different engineering applications may require different concentrations of natural clay aggregates for effective MICP grouting. This study provides a promising method for enhancing the MICP technique.

Summary: This study explores the impact of intervening consolidation on pile group installations, revealing that it affects factors such as pore water pressure, soil strength, and pile bearing capacity. It is non-conservative to assume soil remains at in-situ strength state for short-term pile capacity estimation in design practice without intervening consolidation. Timely dissipation of excess pore pressure among neighboring piles is beneficial for the development of pile bearing capacities.

Dynamic interaction of soil and end-bearing piles in sloping ground: Numerical simulation and analytical solution

Liming Qu et al.

Summary: The effects of sloping ground on the vertical pile-to-pile interaction for end-bearing piles embedded in a homogenous soil were investigated, with a focus on amplitude and phase lag in the soil-pile system to reveal the essential characteristics of dynamic pile-pile interaction. The results showed that the dynamic displacement of a free field is position dependent, and the longer embedded segment absorbs more energy from the surrounding soil. An analytical model was established based on the numerical findings to calculate the dynamic responses of pile groups in sloping ground.
