Computational multiphase periporomechanics for unguided cracking in unsaturated porous media

Shashank Menon et al.

Summary: In this article, a computational multiphase periporomechanics paradigm is formulated and implemented for unguided fracturing in unsaturated porous media. The energy-based criterion for arbitrary crack formation is proposed using the peridynamic effective force state for unsaturated porous media. The simplified model for unsaturated fluid flow in the fracture space is in line with the nonlocal formulation of unsaturated fluid flow in the bulk. Numerical simulations are conducted to validate the accuracy and robustness of the model, and numerical examples are presented to demonstrate its efficacy for unguided cracking in unsaturated porous media.

Updated Lagrangian unsaturated periporomechanics for extreme large deformation in unsaturated porous media

Shashank Menon et al.

Summary: This article presents a new framework for unsaturated periporomechanics, which adopts an updated Lagrangian approach and utilizes the bond-associated sub-horizon concept to enhance the stability and accuracy of the solid skeleton under extreme large deformation. It also demonstrates the efficacy and robustness of the computational updated Lagrangian periporomechanics paradigm in modeling extreme large deformation in porous media under drained conditions.

A computational periporomechanics model for localized failure in unsaturated porous media

Shashank Menon et al.

Summary: This article presents a computational plastic periporomechanics model for localized failure in unsaturated porous media assuming passive atmospheric pressure. The model is based on the hypothesis that unsaturated porous media can be represented by a collection of two-phase material points with infinitesimal volumes interacting within a finite distance. The numerical implementation is validated by simulating classical coupled poromechanics problems and demonstrating the robustness of the model under different scenarios.

Modelling the behaviour of sensitive clays experiencing large deformations using non-local regularisation techniques

Vikram Singh et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a methodology to simulate the strain-softening-hardening response of sensitive clays during extensive remoulding, using a non-local strain-softening technique implemented into a Finite Element Analysis software. The non-local model significantly reduces solution mesh dependency and proves to be important for analyzing the strain-softening behavior of clays.

A stabilized computational nonlocal poromechanics model for dynamic analysis of saturated porous media

Shashank Menon et al.

Summary: This article presents a stable computational nonlocal poromechanics model for dynamic analysis of saturated porous media, which eliminates zero-energy modes and incorporates inhomogeneous solid deformation and fluid flow through an energy method. The stable coupled nonlocal poromechanics model is solved using an implicit time integration scheme and validated through numerical examples. The efficacy of the stable coupled poromechanics framework for localized failure under dynamic loads is demonstrated through dynamic strain localization in saturated porous media.
