A new fractional-order model for time-dependent damage of rock under true triaxial stresses

Zhi Zheng et al.

Summary: This study establishes a new fractional-order damage element and a fractional-order creep damage model for rocks under true triaxial stresses, based on the understanding of their time-dependent mechanical properties. The proposed model is verified and shows good agreement with experimental results, indicating its wide applicability and rationality. The study also investigates the sensitivity of the true triaxial stress states and model parameters to creep characteristics. The research provides a theoretical basis for predicting time-dependent disasters and analyzing the long-term stability of surrounding rock in deep engineering.

Acoustic Emission b Value Characteristics of Granite under True Triaxial Stress

Longjun Dong et al.

Summary: The b value of acoustic emission is an important parameter for predicting rock fractures. This study analyzed the changes in b value during rock failure and investigated the characteristics of acoustic emission events. The results showed that b value calculated using the average amplitude had higher accuracy, and an interval of event counts of 200 was suggested for b value calculations. The study also found that the b value decreased before fracture and decreased with increasing confining pressure.

Experimental and damage constitutive study of the stress-induced post-peak deformation and brittle-ductile behaviours of prismatic deeply buried marble

Zhi Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the stress-induced brittle-ductile behavior of deeply buried rock, focusing on prismatic marble. Triaxial compression tests were conducted under different confining pressures to analyze the strength, deformation, and brittle-ductile characteristics of the marble. A method to control the brittle-ductile behavior by adjusting the key parameters (beta and B-d) affecting the pre-peak hardening rate and post-peak damage rate was proposed. The relationship between the key parameters and confining pressure was established. An elastoplastic damage constitutive relation was developed and numerically simulated. The proposed model accurately captured the stress-induced brittle-ductile behavior of deeply buried rock.

Estimating the strength and deformation of columnar jointed rock mass based on physical model test

Xiangcheng Que et al.

Summary: The study conducted uniaxial compression tests on artificial rock specimens with different columnar structures to model the mechanical behavior of columnar jointed rock mass (CJRM). Strength and deformation anisotropy were compared and analyzed based on the structural features, with empirical relations derived to predict field mechanical parameters. The proposed empirical correlations effectively estimated the mechanical parameters of CJRM and the relation based on RQD was particularly valuable in site investigations with limited information.

Experimental Study on Coupling Influence of Temperature and Confining Pressure to Deformation and Strength Characteristics of Rock-like Material with Pre-Existing Crack

Hongwei Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that temperature and confining pressure influenced the destructive characteristics of rock-like material, with an increase in confining pressure leading to higher strength and peak strain in the material. The combined effect of pre-existing cracks, temperature, and confining pressure resulted in a more complex mechanism of soft rock deformation.

Influence of grain size on strength of polymineralic crystalline rock: New insights from DEM grain-based modeling

Summary: The research shows that the strength of rock increases with the grain size in the rock model, as larger grain size reduces the number of grain interfaces leading to higher rock strength. By degrading grain boundary parameters with increasing grain size, a plausible explanation is provided for the grain size effect on rock strength.

Experimental Study on Strain Burst Characteristics of Sandstone Under True Triaxial Loading and Double Faces Unloading in One Direction

Manchao He et al.

Summary: The commonalities of the two types of strain burst experiments include approximately equal failure stress and dissipation energy percentage, similar evolution of mean velocity of the free face, and consistent subregions of the fracture showing shear, buckling, splitting, and ejection zones. Unloading double faces resulted in a higher strain burst intensity, with larger initial ejection velocity, burst pit volume, and lower peak frequency, as well as more obvious features of flaky and massive fragments and more shear microcracks compared to unloading single face.
