A Selection of Benchmark Problems in Solid Mechanics and Applied Mathematics

Joerg Schroeder et al.

Summary: This paper presents benchmark problems in computational solid mechanics, addressing classical fields such as elasticity, incompressibility, material interfaces, thin structures, and plasticity at finite deformations. Various groups use different numerical schemes, including (mixed) Galerkin finite element and isogeometric analysis formulations, with some programming codes available open-source. The output is measured using carefully designed quantities of interest, allowing for comparison of other models, discretizations, and implementations, while also showing computational robustness through mesh refinement studies.

A Taylor-Hood type virtual element formulations for large incompressible strains

P. Wriggers et al.

Summary: Considerable progress has been made in the area of virtual element method, especially in dealing with large strain problems and incompressible material behavior. A new scheme is proposed in this paper, combining quadratic serendipity ansatz for displacements with a linear pressure field, and the virtual element formulations are discussed and compared in the paper.

Scaled boundary cubature scheme for numerical integration over planar regions with affine and curved boundaries

Eric B. Chin et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the scaled boundary cubature (SBC) scheme for accurate and efficient integration of functions over polygons and two-dimensional regions bounded by parametric curves. The SBC method reduces integration over a region bounded by curves to integration over curved triangular regions, applicable to convex, nonconvex, and star-convex domains. Several methods are introduced for smoothing integrands with singularities, resulting in highly efficient integration of weakly singular functions. The SBC method demonstrates broad applicability and superior performance in benchmark problems compared to existing integration methods.
