Molecular dynamics simulations on the intergranular crack propagation of magnesium bicrystals

Zheyuan Xing et al.

Summary: As an important micro-structure, grain boundary plays a significant role in the micro-structure evolution and mechanical property of metallic materials. This study investigates the propagation mechanisms of intergranular cracks along [1100] symmetric tilt grain boundaries in magnesium bicrystals under tensile loading conditions using comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations, considering the effects of grain boundary misorientation angle, temperature, and solid solution.

Role of temperature and strain rate on the stress reversal in dynamic damage of monocrystalline NiTi alloy

Zhongpeng Qi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of temperature and strain rate on tensile stress reversal in dynamic damage of single-crystal nickel titanium (NiTi) alloy. It is observed that at temperatures between 2350 and 2700 K, a double-peak structure in the stress reversal curve occurs, with the second reversal dependent on void nucleation. The number of peaks changes from two to one as the strain rate increases.

Atomic scale simulation of the strain rate and temperature dependence of crack growth and stacking faults in zirconium

V. Podgurschi et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the deformation mechanisms in single crystal zirconium fracture. The effects of temperature and strain rate were studied, revealing that crack tip orientation strongly influences the fracture behavior. Twinning and dislocation emission were observed on the basal and prismatic planes, with temperature affecting the dislocation density. The addition of iodine affected the energy of stacking fault formation.

Atomistic simulation of martensitic transformations induced by deformation of α-Fe single crystal during the mode-I fracture

Zheng Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates deformation-induced martensitic transformations (DIMTs) in a-Fe single crystal during mode-I fracture process using molecular dynamics simulation and first-principle calculations. The formation of c (fcc) phase near the crack tip leads to quasi-cleavage fracture, which is verified to be close to experimental results. The results highlight the relationship between fractures and DIMTs in iron and ferroalloys under mechanical loading conditions.
