Six new transformation pathways connecting simple crystal structures and common intermetallic crystal structures

Summary: This study discovered six new pathways connecting different crystal structures of metallic phases, which can be initiated by dynamical instabilities in the precursor phase, with a common trigger being a large difference in atomic radii between the constituents of the alloy. These results have important implications for understanding solid-state nucleation mechanisms of intermetallic compounds and suggest systematic approaches for discovering new intermetallic crystal structures, especially in high dimensional composition spaces.

Thermal Stability of Aluminum-Nickel Binary Alloys Containing the Al-Al3Ni Eutectic

Summary: Al-Ni binary alloys containing Al3Ni eutectic and proeutectic phases showed the capability to retain strength at high temperatures, with the contribution of Al3Ni phases decreasing as temperature increased, especially above 300 degrees C. The finer Al3Ni eutectic phase was found to be more effective in strengthening the alloy compared to the coarser Al3Ni proeutectic phase, which lost its influence completely above 300 degrees C.
