Optimized HSIC-based tests for sensitivity analysis: Application to thermalhydraulic simulation of accidental scenario on nuclear reactor

Mohamed Reda El Amri et al.

Summary: This paper proposes new goal-oriented algorithms to optimize the global sensitivity analysis based on the permutation HSIC independence tests. These algorithms include screening-oriented, ranking-oriented, and ranking-screening-oriented types, which have been tested and compared for efficiency and time saving on both analytical examples and thermalhydraulic use cases.

Sequential Design of Multi-Fidelity Computer Experiments: Maximizing the Rate of Stepwise Uncertainty Reduction

Remi Stroh et al.

Summary: This article discusses the sequential design of experiments for multi-fidelity numerical simulators, proposing a new Bayesian strategy called maximal rate of stepwise uncertainty reduction (MR-SUR) which aims to maximize the ratio between expected reduction of uncertainty and simulation cost. The strategy unifies existing methods and provides a principled approach for developing new ones.

Rapid evaluation and optimization of carbon dioxide-enhanced oil recovery using reduced-physics proxy models

Watheq J. Al-Mudhafar et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a simplified physics surrogate model constructed using experimental design and machine learning, which is used to evaluate and optimize the CO2-assisted gravity drainage process. By manipulating operational decision parameters, the goal of increasing oil production in the reservoir is achieved. Additionally, four machine learning algorithms were built as proxy surrogates, and the most accurate metamodel was selected through cross-validation.

Using machine learning for model benchmarking and forecasting of depletion-induced seismicity in the Groningen gas field

Jan Limbeck et al.

Summary: This study investigates induced seismicity in the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands due to ongoing depletion, using machine learning techniques to predict seismic activity rates. By combining rock mechanical experiments and physical-statistical models, it is found that seismic forecasts generated by Support Vector Machines outperform baselines significantly.

Benchmark study of simulators for thermo-hydraulic modelling of low enthalpy geothermal processes

Julian E. Mindel et al.

Summary: A comparative test suite was created to assess the thermo-hydraulic modelling capabilities of various geothermal simulators, with 10 different simulators being used as benchmarks. Results from the tests compared among participants showed that most simulators were able to perform reliably, but significant relative deviations occurred in cases with strong gradients or due to sub-optimal model setup caused by simulator limitations.
