Interface characterization of hybrid biocompatible fiber-metal laminates after laser-based surface treatment

A. Trauth et al.

Summary: Fiber metal-laminates based on titanium and self-reinforced polylactide, with a laser-induced surface pre-treatment and hot-pressing bonding, show promising potential for medical implants. Extensive parameter studies and testing revealed that laser-induced pre-treatment significantly enhances interface strength between the metallic and polymeric parts.

A simple and effective resin pre-coating treatment on grinded, acid pickled and anodised substrates for stronger adhesive bonding between Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and CFRP

Yunsen Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of different surface treatments for adhesive bonding between carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) and titanium alloy. Acid pickling, grinding, anodising treatments, and resin pre-coating (RPC) were employed. The results showed that grinding and anodised specimens had higher bond strengths than acid pickled specimens. RPC treatment significantly increased bond strengths, especially on rough surfaces. The combination of NaOH anodising and RPC treatment yielded the highest bond strength and changed the failure mode.

Characterizing friction for fiber reinforced composites manufacturing: Method development and effect of process parameters

Arit Das et al.

Summary: In fiber-reinforced polymer composite manufacturing, frictional behavior plays a crucial role in determining the quality of the manufactured parts. By conducting frictional sliding rheometry tests, researchers were able to accurately characterize the tool-ply friction and investigate the effects of processing parameters on frictional response. The results showed that increasing temperature reduced frictional forces due to increased resin flowability, while increasing sliding rates significantly increased frictional forces. The influence of applied load on frictional characteristics was more complex, involving contributions from adhesive and normal forces. Contact area measurements at different temperatures, normal forces, and sliding rates provided insights for interpreting the results.

Enhanced interfacial adhesion of CF/PEEK-titanium hybrid laminates via introducing micro-nano layers with multi-walled carbon nanotube networks

Chunming Ji et al.

Summary: An effective strategy of introducing micro-nano layers with multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) networks between titanium and PEEK layers via electrophoretic deposition was proposed to enhance the interfacial adhesion of CF/PEEK-titanium hybrid laminates. The optimal deposition condition was explored, resulting in a significant increase of interlaminar shear strength compared to the sandblasted-only case. Micromorphology, apparent contact angle, and roughness analyses provided insights into the enhancement mechanisms and demonstrated the excellent interlaminar properties of the hybrid laminates.

The effect of MWCNTs with different diameters on the interface properties of Ti/CFRP fiber metal laminates

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: The study focuses on enhancing the mechanical properties of Fiber-metal laminates (FMLs) by adding multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to a polymer matrix, leading to a significant improvement in interface performance. The van der Waals energy, total energy, and interfacial interaction energy all showed varying trends with different diameters of MWCNTs, eventually stabilizing and indicating an improvement in interface properties. At an average MWCNT diameter of 8 nm, the interface fracture energy increased by nearly 180% compared to the material without MWCNTs.
