Characterisation of off-axis tensile behaviour and mesoscale deformation of woven carbon-fibre/PEEK using digital image correlation and X-ray computed tomography

John Holmes et al.

Summary: This study investigates the deformation response of multi-ply woven composites at different angles by combining digital image correlation (DIC) and 3D micro-computed tomography (mu CT). Significant mechanical property variances and topographical/strain differences were observed between orientations due to layer alignment. Additionally, inter-tow and intra-tow shearing during off-axis extension and corresponding fiber reorientation were identified, highlighting the benefits of combining DIC and mu CT.

Temperature dependent dynamic compressive response of PA66-GF30 composite under constant strain rate multiaxial loading

Longhui Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamic compressive behavior and failure of PA66-GF30 under uniaxial and multiaxial loading at different strain rates and temperatures. The material shows pressure sensitivity and exhibits micro cracks and macro strain localization after reaching maximum stress under high strain rate loading. Confined PA66-GF30 experiences adiabatic shear failure while unconfined material shows fiber pull-out in the fractured matrix. A modified Drucker-Prager model is proposed to describe the pressure-dependent compressive strength of PA66-GF30 under various conditions.

On strain rate and temperature dependent mechanical properties and constitutive models for additively manufactured polylactic acid (PLA) materials

Junjie Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of temperature and strain rate on the mechanical properties of polymeric materials printed by fused deposition modeling (FDM). Uniaxial tensile tests are conducted on FDM-printed polylactic acid (PLA) specimens under different strain rates and temperatures. The digital image correlation (DIC) technique is used to measure surface strain, and the scanning electron microscope (SEM) technique is employed to analyze failure modes and mechanisms. The Zener model and Cowper-Symonds material model are developed to predict stress-strain responses and yield strength. The study concludes that temperature and strain rate have significant effects on the behavior of FDM-printed polymers.

Experimental study on CF/PEEK thermoplastic fastener: Effects of fastener matrix crystallinity and fibre content on the strength of single-lap joint

Chenxi Yao et al.

Summary: A novel joining method using unidirectional CF/PEEK thermoplastic composites fastener (TPCF) was proposed in this study, showing higher specific joint strength compared to traditional titanium riveted joints. The strength of TPCF joints increases with increasing carbon fibre mass fraction and decreasing cooling rate, as confirmed by experiments. Additionally, the fracture face of TPCF after structure failure revealed a 'U-shaped' stepped pattern caused by shear force and impact load.

Effect of basalt fiber on tribological and mechanical properties of polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) composites

Bowen Wang et al.

Summary: Short basalt fiber reinforced PEEK composites exhibit increased surface roughness, decreased friction coefficient, and the lowest specific wear rate, along with good ultimate tensile strength and elongation at break. Thermal and rheological behaviors of the composites were also investigated to understand the effect of basalt fiber on the crystallization performance and flow abilities of PEEK composites.

Effect of cooling temperature on deconsolidation and pulling forces in a thermoplastic pultrusion process

Nawaf Alsinani et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of changing the cooling die temperature profile in TPC pultrusion on thermal deconsolidation behavior and pulling forces. Lower pulling forces and prevention of deconsolidation were achieved through quick cooling below the glass transition temperature, resulting in improved surface finish quality. The developed cooling system shows potential for significant new opportunities in various fields utilizing pultruded thermoplastic composites.
