Bio-based boronic ester vitrimer for realizing sustainable and highly thermally conducting nanocomposites

Yongming Shi et al.

Summary: Bio-based vitrimers prepared with tannic acid, glycerol, and boric acid exhibit properties of a hard solid and a viscoelastic liquid at low and high temperatures, respectively. The addition of NaOH and cellulose nanofibers increases the degree of boronic ester bonding, resulting in improved tensile strength and hardness. The optimal nanocomposite demonstrates higher thermal conductivity compared to organic-based polymers. Composites with Al2O3 and hexagonal boron nitride fillers exhibit extremely high thermal conductivity. Acidic treatment of the nanocomposite allows for the recovery of the filler, indicating potential applications of these materials.

Enhancing performance of phosphorus containing vanillin-based epoxy resins by P-N non-covalently functionalized graphene oxide nanofillers

Pitchaimari Gnanasekar et al.

Summary: In this study, phosphorus and nitrogen-containing non-covalently functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) was synthesized via a single step process and a biobased phosphorus-containing vanillin epoxy resin (VPE) was made via a two-step process as a flame-retardant adhesive. The incorporation of FGO as reinforcement in the epoxy resin matrix improved the mechanical, thermal, and flame-retardant properties of the composite systems. The cured VPE/FGO nanocomposites exhibited excellent thermal and flame-retardant properties, with VPE containing 9 wt% FGO achieving the highest LOI value and V-0 rating in the UL-94 test. The study demonstrated a promising approach for synthesizing mechanically strong, thermally-stable, and environmentally-friendly flame-retardant bio-based composite resins.
