Predicting fatigue damage in composites subjected to general loading conditions

Mathew W. Joosten et al.

Summary: A computationally efficient fatigue analysis methodology is proposed that can predict the initiation and propagation of cracks using a cycle jump approach and a unified local fatigue cohesive zone model. The results of verification and validation experiments indicate that this method can reproduce fatigue damage initiation and evolution for different configurations and load combinations.

A reduced-input cohesive zone model with regularized extended finite element method for fatigue analysis of laminated composites in Abaqus

Yu-Jui Liang et al.

Summary: The cohesive zone model integrated into the Rx-FEM framework allows for accurate prediction of crack initiation and propagation using S-N stress-life curves. This method offers practical advantages over traditional Paris law in terms of simplicity and predictability by relying on intrinsic relationships between stress-life curves and crack propagation.

Mesh size objective fatigue damage propagation in laminated composites using the multiscale discrete damage theory

Zimu Su et al.

Summary: A mesh size objective multiscale modeling approach is developed for predicting fatigue failure of long fiber-reinforced composites based on the multiscale discrete damage theory. The approach achieves mesh-size objectivity by introducing a length scale operator and uses temporal multiscaling for tracking long-term fatigue damage evolution efficiently. The performance of the model is demonstrated through analysis of different laminate configurations under fatigue loading.

A continuum damage model for composite laminates: Part III-Fatigue

J. Llobet et al.

Summary: The mesoscale continuum damage model for laminated composites developed by the AMADE research group over the past 10 years has been extended for fatigue life and residual strength predictions. The model includes new functions to account for material degradation under fatigue loads and uses the cycle jump approach to reduce computational cost. Validation of the computational model was done by simulating progressive failure mechanisms of open-hole and double-edge notched specimens under various load cases in the follow-up publication.
