Optimization study on wet electrostatic powder coating process to manufacture UHMWPE/LDPE towpregs

Ashraf Nawaz Khan et al.

Summary: In this study, an attempt was made to enhance the conductivity of UHMWPE fibers by coating them with LDPE powder. The optimization of processing parameters, including temperature, air pressure, and nozzle angle, was performed to achieve the desired fiber volume fraction. The results showed that the nozzle angle had the most significant influence on matrix deposition.

Robotic automated fiber placement of carbon fiber towpregs

A. Forcellese et al.

Summary: In the study of manufacturing composite laminates using R-AFP technology, the effects of applying constant pressure and resin content on mechanical properties were investigated. A decrease in compaction roller pressure was observed to result in lower tensile strength and higher elastic modulus, while an increase in resin content led to reductions in ultimate tensile strength and elastic modulus.

Production and processing of pre-impregnated thermoplastic tapes by pultrusion and compression moulding

Puria Esfandiari et al.

Summary: This work reviews the production and processing techniques of thermoplastic pre-impregnated materials, which offer the possibility of recycling and reprocessing. Pultrusion is an efficient and continuous method for producing composite profiles, while heated compression moulding allows for more complex-shaped parts. Mechanical testing and microscope analysis were conducted to evaluate the consolidation and dispersion of fibers and polymer in the final material.

Multi-parametric investigation on the properties of powder-coated UHMWPE /LDPE towpreg manufactured through wet-electrostatic technique

Ashraf Nawaz Khan et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel technique, wet-electrostatic powder coating, for producing flexible non-conductive UHMWPE/LDPE towpreg to simplify the weaving process of complex preform structures. The technique involves the unconventional electrostatic powder coating on non-conductive twistless UHMWPE tow using a surface modifier, resulting in excellent interfacial properties. The single polymer towpreg with high adhesiveness improves interface bonding due to similar polymer classes. Optimization of processing variables using Box-Behnken response surface methodology has been performed, and the obtained multi-parametric equations for output responses are in good agreement with experimental results.

Influence of Line Processing Parameters on Properties of Carbon Fibre Epoxy Towpreg

Murat Celik et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the performance of low-cost unidirectional carbon fibre towpregs in terms of line production speed and fibre volume fraction. The results show that adjusting the production speed allows for different fibre volume fractions to be achieved, resulting in composites with varying mechanical properties. Additionally, fibre straightness plays a key role in the mechanical performance of the composites.

Contact resistance heating of unidirectional carbon fibre tows in a powder-epoxy towpregging line

Murat Celik et al.

Summary: Contact resistances are important in Joule heating systems. Measuring the contact resistances between metal roller electrodes and carbon fiber tows provides a better understanding and improves the accuracy of the heating process. The study shows that contact resistances in the towpregging line are significant and contact resistance heating changes the heating profile.

Effects of the quality of pre-consolidated materials on the mechanical properties and morphology of thermoplastic pultruded flat laminates

Kirill Minchenkov et al.

Summary: Pre-consolidated tapes in thermoplastic pultrusion solve the problem of impregnating reinforcements with high-viscosity thermoplastic resins. However, laminates made from pre-consolidated sheets exhibit higher compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths than those made from pre-consolidated tapes. This difference in strength is due to the presence of unimpregnated regions and matrix cracks in the tapes, which are absent in the sheets. Pre-consolidated sheets enable the production of thermoplastic pultruded composites with larger cross-sections and better mechanical performance compared to composites made from pre-consolidated tapes described in the literature.
